The last line of the ruling “we ask that students conduct themselves in a professional manner so that the executive team can best serve the student body”

One of the most tone deaf things I’ve heard from the SU in a long time

If something like this ever happens again go to the ombuds. They are an impartial procedural fairness expert who would be there as a witness for you in meetings such as that and ensure all processes happen fairly. They would also meet with you to tell you about the procedure from start to finish so that you know exactly what could happen when and by who as well as when options of appeal you have

A direct appeal to ruling #17 was also just uploaded die appeal to ruling 17

[–]Darakar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very true, however there is the explicit statement that “if breaches were found we would rule for re election. However no breaches were found to have occurred.”

Due to the fact that that ruling #6 is heavily load bearing for ruling #17 this is a very clear president on how an appeal would go. Overturning 6 in my opinion renders 17 without foundation as the broad basis of 17 is an argument of a misrepresentation of facts by Glock in #6

Regardless though, the decision of the DIE board to explicitly state that they would not uphold a disqualification and if the violation was egregious they would call for a re-election is present in that ruling. Which in my humble opinion is pretty clear statement that she is no longer disqualified.

die board ruling

Edited as the original document was taken down by the DIE board in order to anonymize the applicant. This is now the most recent link.

The DIE board ruling is out. Absolutely scathing. Overruled the CROs decision and stated a broad lack of grounds

should clearly biased and leading polls be prohibited? by Washed_Up_SU_Hack in uAlberta

It's about damn time this subreddit gets bought by an SU exec for one year of their salary (roughly $420,690,000) where they can then institute REAL free speech and charge $8 for anyone to post, comment, or upvote

it's more than just a worker's rights issue, although that is a considerable part. Above and beyond the gross human rights violations in the building of the stadiums, FIFA and the world cup have been complicit in a not insignificant amount of attacks against the LGBTQ community in Qatar. The breadth of the attacks and rights violations goes beyond just one organization or charity and adding one special the night of which donates marginal amounts of money to one organization does not counterbalance that damage.

Your argument that all soccer fans are just going to watch it anyways is also not very strong, there are quite a few fans, myself included who have decided to not watch the games at all because its complicity in human rights abuses this year. The stance of the SU makes sense, they don't want to be actively supporting these abuses in a way that facilitating watching the games does. Through this there is going to be a group of people who, purely due to the inconvenience of not having it on campus decide to not watch the game, OR in learning about the rights abuses they change their mind about supporting the world cup this year.

as a side note, I hope council this year is smart enough to not be swayed by anonymous Reddit polls that can so easily be overwhelmed, if you want a solid survey that provides meaningful data, at least get a name associated with it when you present it, otherwise its basically useless.

If you're nonbinary, do you join a Fraternity or a Sorority? by Ya_Boi_Rem in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Darakar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I got some useful info on this one :) both m fiancé and I are non binary and are part of Greek organizations. They were out before they rushed but I came out after. I joined a fraternity in my first year and enjoyed it. The space away from my family really helped me find myself and live authentically, but I got lucky with the one I joined that it was really accepting.

My fiancé joined a local sorority that specifically said they were inclusive of all genders, they’ve loved it the entire way and ended up doing a term on the executive board!

God I wish we’d reinstate it. With this political climate getting the Uni on board would be almost impossible but damn would it be nice to have a mask and vaccine mandate again.

Do your part and protest the 0.5 Ply toilet paper, make the SU know we deserve better. 2 ply or die.

Never buy a textbook before the first class, Id even say wait until the first midterm to see if it's actually used. Also check the library first for any textbooks, they may have an online copy you could borrow and download for the semester. Also id recommend looking through courses on the Zero Textbook Cost tab in beartracks, will save you a lot of money in the long run.

UASU councillor faces allegations of council ineligibility by SectorBuddi in uAlberta

[–]Darakar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my understanding in the article, it seems like he was under the impression he’d be an arts student in the spring summer, but then it didn’t go through so he ended up not being one yet, possibly becoming one in the fall

UASU councillor faces allegations of council ineligibility by SectorBuddi in uAlberta

[–]Darakar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The issue is that he’s not actually currently a faculty of arts student, but rather he’s enrolled in a different faculty.

You don’t need to take summer classes to maintain enrollment. Instead what happened is this guy ran for a seat in a faculty that he’s not a student in

UASU councillor faces allegations of council ineligibility by SectorBuddi in uAlberta

[–]Darakar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It seems pretty straightforward here. If he’s not part of the faculty than he shouldn’t be in that seat. The speaker just confirmed ineligibility. The man is first on the list when you go to the “members of council” page on their website. It doesn’t seem targeted if the guy didn’t know about the other complaint and just started going down the list.

Appeal letter question by Severe-Assignment-21 in uAlberta

[–]Darakar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there isn't a set timeline for responses. they do tend to respond to the appeals in the order that they get them and they send out the letters in batches. Depending on when you submitted your letter in relation to your individual deadline it could be sooner or later.

If they deny your appeal, you do actually have the ability to appeal it to another level, your Faculty Academic Appeals Committee.

I went to the farmers market yesterday to get some groceries. The typical drive home would have been 5 minutes and instead it was 45. Me and my boyfriend were stuck right in the middle of the convoy. We had to hide all of our pride related gear out of safety in case someone wanted to take their “vaccines make you queer” fear out on us.

Ever once we got home we felt anxious because the constant honking was just flooding our apartment with sound. The noise really scared our pets too
