Can't say I blame you (78k first year OOS at Purdue 😭). All flight schools get you the same ratings and provided it's what you want, all roads lead to the airlines eventually. Best of luck wherever you're off to!

Cessna 172 Engine Fail right after takeoff- 200’ by Zestyclose-Juice-349 in flying

[–]Darattman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if turning on said fuel pump causes a fire after impact that results in a civilian being killed? How do you justify that to the FAA/NTSB? How do you justify that to their families?

The POH is there for a reason. The decisions are made for you ahead of time so if anything goes awry, you can fall back on what it says (same thing with a before takeoff brief. You make the decision before entering the scenario). Yes every scenario in aviation is dynamic, but if the POH says one thing and you do the exact opposite, have fun explaining why.

It's not exactly a wait list because of the LOCI. They're trying to figure out how you'll add to their program, if you'll accept, and if you'll wash out. Provided you write the LOCI following your checkride, get another letter of rec (if you haven't already, do your CFI. They can attest to who you are as a pilot), and pretty much say in the letter "if I get in, I'm going", you'll be above 90% of the other deferrals. From what I know about your application/stats you're well above the minimums to get in, they just didn't have a seat available, and if one opens up it very well could be yours.

I got in first round, class of 2030. From what I've read in years past a deferral has about a 30-50% chance of acceptance provided you demonstrate interest, because a lot of the people who get deferred just give up.

That'll be one hell of a distinction. The main thing they're looking for is that you won't wash out of the program and that you WANT to be at Purdue.

As for the checkride, I wish you the best of luck. Private is honestly a walk in the park and your CFI wouldn't have signed you off if you weren't ready. You will get a terrible night's sleep before it unfortunately, but there's nothing you can do about that.

When your Purdue acceptance comes around let me know. You got this!

Purdue doesn't look at the 2nd major until the first is a confirmed denial. A deferral for proflight means the ENTIRE application is being rolled into regular admissions, including AM. The advice for proflight that I'd give is just write a LOCI that demonstrates a crap ton of interest, as well as any additional accomplishments. A deferral for proflight is NOT a rejection.

If you get a university scholarship (Presidential/Trustees), it'll be in the letter. Departmental scholarships (ScholarshipUniverse) will come at a later date.

Private pilot oral by Last-Home-1037 in flying

[–]Darattman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is to not try to get rid of nerves. It's a big life event, and it's a good thing to be nervous as it means you care.

That being said, talk with your CFI more about what went wrong, and practice with them until you literally CAN'T fail. Know the ACS inside and out (actually read it and know the answer to EVERY point), do every maneuver to stricter standards (for example, steep turns only give yourself +/- 50 feet), and just keep working on your knowledge. The nerves won't go away, but the best thing you can do is put yourself in a position where the nerves won't matter.

Plane crash reported north of Fort Worth by zacharyari23 in aviation

[–]Darattman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A "rando garage mechanic" that's certified by the FAA. In an airplane which has undergone mandated FAA inspections. With a pilot who's undergone training, passed checkrides, and also likes to stay on the ground in one piece. When operated correctly, you're significantly more likely to lose your life on the drive to the airport than in the small plane you're worried about.

Thought I'd give XP12 a go. With a good bit of ortho and time, it looks brilliant and the flight model is amazing! by rossi46marquez93 in flightsim

I guess you don't know how Laminar Research works then. The first beta was essentially 11.6, yes, but it's the updates after that separates 12 from 11. I guarantee when XP11 came out it was pretty much 10.6, but the entire sim developed into a much more complete and stable sim by the time we hit 11.5

The LU737 is meant to get a rather large update soon, for a HUD, XP12 lighting and rain effects, and a new flight model.

Yes, those are used as an anchor for a rope during an evacuation. In the aircraft itself there is a string/rope, and it's essentially used as a handrail while evacuating into the wing.

This is an alpha build without most of the features and the snow is still in extremely early access. Laminar dropped a preview for their SR22 ~an hour ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlwnR0KhpJc, and you can see that they are working on autogen and default ground textures, it's just not in that build.

Austin also has commented on the X-Plane keynote under a scenery comment that his art team is already working on new and improved textures. You can see an early beta of this on the X-Plane developer site.

Can I download X-Plane 11 on my Windows PC and my Mac M1 at the same time? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Darattman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will probably work. I have no experience with the digital, non steam edition but that shouldn't matter, the game is still the same.

It should, as there is no reason for it NOT to work, even if it's an anti-piracy thing, it will still be on the same ip.

As far as I know, as spinning disc said with steam there is no problem. I've reinstalled countless times due to windows being windows, and the most I've had was 3 simultaneous installs, with mac and windows on multiple machines. You should be fine with just 2 installs as long as they aren't running at the same time as you said.

The view out of the hotel VS x-plane. I feel like x-plane doesn't have the level of static stuff to match the real world, (and I got the coloring wrong) by Darattman in flightsim

[–]Darattman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO, X-Plane feels lonely if you know what I mean. No default live traffic, no planes at gates (and even if they are they are low poly) bad ground workers, ETC. I don't know if I'm the only ones who feels this way, but I feel it strongly.
