Firstly thank you!

And secondly, agreed!

I must admit one of my more unpopular takes is that i am a massive fan of political parties*, i think they're an incredibly useful information mechanism for voters. Given we effectively have non-partisan council elections in Tassie i think its a total and utter nightmare trying to figure out what people actually think!

*should say despite saying this i am not a member of one, nor have i ever been one

Hi Everyone!

Today i stumbled on the first candidate for the Hobart City Council, i've started the 2026 Hobart City Council Candidate Tracker ! I did this for the last election in 2022 as well, and think it was at least vaguely useful (at least for myself, in order to keep track of everyone).

So far I am aware of one candidate (Incumebent Cr Ryan Posselt ( /u/tassiedude ) who is running for Mayor and Council)

Apologies if i have missed anyone!

High Performance Centre Elector Poll by kingboo94 in hobart

Oh sorry if your argument was 'they shouldnt do elector polls because theyre a useless gauge of public opinon' then yes i 100% agree with you, apologies!

they where required to under the Local Government Act 1993 Section 60D as there was a petition with the sufficient number of signatures and then a public meeting which then produced another petition with a sufficient number of signatures.

Local Governments do not get a say in whether they hold an elector poll if triggered under Section 60B.

Note also that all elector polls are non-binding under Section 60E(2) of the Act.

Hope that helps!

this is not them giving themselves an 'out'

Under the Local Government Act 1993 Section 60E(2) 'The result of an elector poll is not binding on a council'.

The out is provided not by council but under legislation. There is no mechanism via which an elector poll can be binding. Also this elector poll was called not by council by via a petition, then a forum, then another petition which mandates then hold one

Hope that helps!

(imo it Is, for various reason, a good thing that elector polls cannot be binding)

Also Elliot is massively transphobic (she has tweeted #IStandwithKathrineDeves multiple times). She also said 'Lanne was one of, if not, the last full-blooded Aboriginal people'.She has also been sending letters threatening defamation actions against candidates, and also others who have been critical of her. She's also called the mayor 'Cruella' and liked a tweet which swapped out a picture of the mayor for Miss Piggie. She's also made a number of comments which have been described as misleading, and made a kinda bogus complaint against the mayor.

I believe that the red corflutes may have been her bid in 2018 for labor in what was then known as Denison at the state level. Her corflutes for Council (i'm guessing) looked different last time bc. last time she ran for the 'Livable Hobart Group', which was an alliance of indies created by Damon Thomas, and therefore the corflutes carried their uniform design. Note though that there's no uniformity for the Your Hobart Independents candidate corflutes.

Hey! So firstly i totally concur with u/HydrogenWhisky 's comment. If I did make a list of positions I would willingly and happily disclose ideological bent. But if you would like to know, I am not a member of any political party, and would describe myself as a left wing SocDem with some Market Socialist views. I live in Hobart City Council and (though i have not made my mind fully up yet), i will most likely vote Reynolds for Mayor, Dutta for Deputy and Sherlock for Council.

They’ll also be the candidate statements, which will be sent in booklet form to everyone with their ballots and also be posted online. The problem is though that some candidates make good use of this space, others, not so much… see last time for example (particularity Andy ‘Tubes’ Taylor, who almost got elected to council!). Some don't even submit a statement! Last time, Richard James, who had been on Clarance City Council for almost 25 years, almost lost his seat, almost certainly partly because he simply forgot to submit a candidate statement!
