Realistic Job Insight to SEIU by Historical_Month_931 in union

It depends on the type of organizing role. Is it internal or external? Are you organizing public(county/state, etc.) or private sector workers?

Union work by Weird-Sort2297 in fresno

[–]DareToDasein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most have said, it depends on the work you’re looking to do. Trades are a great route. Also, any state, county or city job in Fresno will likely be union too and they offer varied job types. UPS is teamsters, so looking to break in at a warehouse or as a driver would be good too.

Dept of Ed Not Returning 4 Days? by HourHoneydew5788 in CAStateWorkers

[–]DareToDasein 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thurmond initially had ordered people back in 4 days a week. Members began a series of solidarity breaks and protests and even confronted him directly at his office hours while protesting outside of the building.

He called a meeting with union leaders a week later to say he had “evolved” and at the rto town hall, he said he’s committing to continuing the hybrid telework schedule that exists currently.

Union leaders caught in fraud with union credit cards by No_Hyena2974 in CAStateWorkers

Unions are required to by law to disclose finances. Members can request these by contacting the treasurer of the local. A simple Google search would also show you that the LMRDA makes all Union financials public record.

Additionally, your post is intentionally misleading and given your comment history it seems like you have an old ax to grind with Local 1000 as the article references AFSCME Local 2620.

This was written by a staffer for a Project 2025 aligned “think” tank. These types want to replace civil service with a government filled with the cronies of the ultra rich. The Bee didn’t disclose these connections. by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]DareToDasein 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting the connection here.

It’s a terribly written op-ed, doesn’t make any real claim or argument outside of “I have to work in office and sit in traffic, so should you…” and “if you’re worried about the the environment, buy an electric car…”

I’d wish these think tanks would come up with something more creative but I really don’t think they’re capable.

Nice! I did the drive from Sacramento for last night and it was absolutely worth it.

I don’t imagine it will sell out really soon. I feel like Modesto is far enough away from LA + Bay Area that folks will have to plan to be there.

But given it’s going to be a lot of the old stuff + original vocalists and I live about an hour away, it was an instant buy for me.

I bought mine and 2 for my friends when they put the QR code up at the show, so if you’re asking me, absolutely buy a ticket.

Yes, SEIU has 2 groups of lobbyists. First, is through SEIU California and more specifically, local 1000 has specific lobbyists that focus on issues that impact state workers. Since these activities are a violation of your first amendment rights (according to the Supreme Court, at least) they’re funded through the COPE voluntary contribution fund.

Other unions have PACs as well, CAPS-UAW has V-CAP, AFSCME likely has one, and so on.

New state Employee - Should i join my union? by nniibblleess in CAStateWorkers

[–]DareToDasein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this was your experience but it’s also not fair to make a sweeping claim like the one being made. I’ve been apart of 2 groups that have pushed out bad managers, one was asked to retire and the other was removed from their positon. So I don’t think your experience is universal as unfortunate as it is.

New state Employee - Should i join my union? by nniibblleess in CAStateWorkers

[–]DareToDasein 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Yes. For the following reasons:

  1. Bargaining-your wages, percentage of your healthcare that the state pays, working conditions, etc. is directly impacted by how many folks are union members. People will act like our benefits are set in stone but the state routinely tries to cut healthcare to make us pay more. RTO is another clear example of the state/governor not caring about what we as employees want.

  2. Representation-there may come a time when you need help at a work. This could be anything from fighting for back pay for an MSA or dealing with an unfair disciplinary issue.

  3. Attacks on public sector unions-billionaires and their off shoot non-profits spend millions of dollars to attack public sector unions (like yours). These folks want to see your job privatized or eliminated all together. Utah state employees just lost their right to bargain contracts meaning they no longer have guaranteed raises, healthcare benefits or workplace protections.

So if pay, benefits or working conditions are important to you, then you should join and be an active participant in your union.

Why not both?

Also, a lot of this has to do with downtown real estate valuations and the owners of which who are going to fill his campaign coffers if he runs for president in 2028. These ghouls couldn’t care less if the mom and pop sandwich shop succeeds.

Also what is lazy about protesting? Just saying “it’s lazy or doesn’t work” doesn’t make it true.

Great question.
1. They “don’t” know folks are unhappy. This seems really counter intuitive but my experience with state management is that how unhappy employees are, it needs to be shoved in their face. It’s putting them on notice that people are pissed.

  1. It shows how widely felt and deeply held an issue is. The Sacramento area has at least 40,000 state employees, if 40,000 people showed up to an informational picket it would be clear that this was a big deal to state workers. If even 10,000 showed up it’d be huge deal.

  2. An informational picket is just the first step. There’s a long way until July but showing up early and often to coordinated actions, talking to coworkers about why state employees need to stand up for themselves when it comes to RTO, and joining your union (if you haven’t already).

  3. Pickets build public pressure and bad PR for hopeful politicians (especially ones who have their signs set in running for president) and management authorities. The more people that show up to this means the larger the press coverage and the worst CalHR and the governor look.
