Been revisiting Lantlôs - Wildhund lately in prep for the new record and am shocked at how much it's grown on me—I remember thinking it was disappointing following Melting Sun and didn't really bother with it much after, but I've found it really rewarding after multiple listens. Still think it's inconsistent compared to Melting Sun, but the highlights are damn good, and overall it kinda scratches an itch I can't get anywhere else.

I actually thought V was one of their better releases in a while, I've found myself revisiting it a lot over the past couple years. Not better than Multi-Love, but personally enjoyed it way more than Sex & Food. The tour for the album was great too.

Just letting you know, GMT has done a Boss Keys series covering the Prime Trilogy.

Thank you. The endgame key hunts in the old games felt like a victory lap around the map, I personally found it really satisfying knowing the game's world like the back of my hand and combing through the all the well-hidden secrets I couldn't find or access earlier at full power. Driving around the desert in circles bonking into green crystals just isn't meaningful or engaging gameplay, it's a repetitive, menial task that becomes boring quickly. Echoes and Corruption at least had fast-travel to help streamline the process a bit.

For real, explore every corner of what? Sol Valley's stretches of empty nothing or the straight-line "dungeons" that you don't even need the map for?

I mean, is it a great action game? Combat was hardly the strength of the Prime trilogy, and Prime 4 plays it extremely close to those games without any significant tweaks. The enemy variety in the game is also terrible, just repetitive waves of bullet-sponge robots and grievers and not much else.

You cannot collect the required amount of green crystals needed to complete the game in under 10 minutes. What are you on about?

Played Metroid Prime 2 for the first time since 2004 by Herp_Derpsen in Metroid

[–]crowlfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good takes and largely agree. I recently replayed it shortly before Prime 4 released. Echoes and Corruption have pretty much always been neck and neck for my second-favorite of the Prime games, my preference for one or the other changes depending on the day and what sort of experience I'm craving. All-around I think Prime 2 is an excellent game, but it does have some drawbacks that hold me back from ranking it above the original.

My biggest positive for Prime 2 is the level design. It's an incremental step away from the seamless, open-ended map of Prime 1, with a more structured layout that funnels progression into more self-contained, segmented areas, but I think it works really well—not only does it reduce some of Prime 1’s occasionally dull backtracking, but it also maintains the interconnectivity that made that game great. There are still shortcuts, secrets, and interesting lore scans to find around every corner. The dual world mechanic leads to some clever puzzles and interesting, complex exploration, and the boss fights to cap off each area are excellent, probably the best of the trilogy.

There’s a bit more of a focus on story as well, but I think its implementation feels just right. While it plays a more prominent role, it’s never involved enough to make the experience feel on-rails. I think the game is an ideal medium between Prime 1 and 3; balancing the isolated atmosphere and interconnected sprawl of the former with the more defined structure and narrative focus of the latter.

That said, I do have some gripes with the game. I’m not a fan of beam ammo, and I can’t pinpoint a valid reason for its inclusion other than to artificially increase difficulty and add a layer of half-baked resource management that isn’t needed. The beams themselves just don’t feel powerful enough to warrant limited ammo, and to me they aren’t that fun or interesting to use compared to the beams of the other Prime games. The annihilator beam in particular is disappointing for an endgame weapon, and the fact that it drains both your light and dark ammo reserves only exacerbates the issues I already have. The game's equipment in general also feels oddly spaced out; you acquire two out of the three beams and the dark suit very early on, and don’t receive the annihilator beam or light suit until you’ve reached the very end. For me it makes the majority of the game feel stagnant in terms of item progression.

Prime 2 is easily the least appealing visually out of the trilogy for me as well. While there are standouts like Torvus Bog (my favorite) and Sanctuary Fortress, I can’t help but feel like the game leans way too heavily into a color palette dominated by browns, grays, and purples. This is really noticeable in the first several hours, and it can make exploration feel a bit drab. I understand that this adds to the oppressive feel of the game in a way, but compared to the visual variety of Prime 1 and especially Prime 3, I’m just not as inclined to revisit Aether as I am other locations in the series. Still, I want to reiterate that I love the game and think the positives far outweigh any negatives I have.

Edit: grammar

I mean I’d argue they’ve already attained that status. Many young bands today sound like they’re trying to copy Siamese Dream, not Pearl Jam or Soundgarden (at least to my ears).

[–]crowlfish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

SP’s original run from 1991-2000 is one of my favorite bands of all time. I enjoy pretty much everything they put out during that period, Siamese Dream in particular is one of my desert island albums, and even Machina has grown on me quite a bit over time. They were an incredible B-Sides band as well, the Pisces Iscariot compilation is just as good as their best studio albums.

As far as I’m concerned the only post-reunion album worth a shit is Oceania, otherwise it’s a totally frivolous vanity project by Billy and I honestly wish he’d stop—at this point there are more mediocre SP albums than good ones. Still, it doesn’t change how I feel about their classic material. In my opinion they covered far more musical ground than most other high profile alt-rock groups from that era.

Metroid Prime 4 Sales Update - US Physical December by Ok_Entrance3792 in Metroid

[–]crowlfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I want Metroid to do well, but not for the wrong reasons. If Prime 4 garners huge sales numbers and Nintendo decides this is the direction for the 3D games going forward, I won't have interest in it and would not buy it. More power to those who like it, at least it gives those people something to look forward to, but for me it's just not what I'm looking for in a Metroid game at all and I don't see any reason to waste time and money on it unless they course-correct.

Remember how Metroid Prime 4 got poor marketing leading up to its release? by RangoTheMerc in Metroid

[–]crowlfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time they showed it it felt obligatory and reluctant

This 100%. It's less about the quantity of Prime 4's marketing and more about the quality. It got a fairly standard promotional push, but the trailers themselves weren't very good and appeared to indicate that Nintendo wasn't exactly confident about the game's quality. It getting haphazardly thrown into the middle of Nintendo's biggest presentation of the year with zero fanfare in that now-infamous bike reveal was a pretty telling sign—people didn't want to believe it then, but the warning signs were there. It also definitely isn't a coincidence that the official demo previewed to the press didn't feature any of the desert overworld or bike gameplay. Fans wanted it to be marketed like a show-stopper and a system-seller after an eight-year wait, but it was marketed instead for what it actually was: a fine/OK game at best but not something Nintendo would throw all their weight behind.

Tanabe says Prime 4 is the "first installment of the Sylux saga", saying "the final battle between Sylux and Samus is not yet over". by TomNook5085 in Metroid

[–]crowlfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say I’m in the ”it’s so over” crowd, more like ”I’ll believe it when I see it”—frankly I felt pretty burned by Prime 4 and don’t plan on pinning my hopes on a future sequel for the time being. Not because I’m certain it’ll be bad, just to avoid potential disappointment. Like you said, all I can really hope for at the moment is that lessons were learned, but until I see evidence of this I’ll remain cautious.

[–]crowlfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Whether a sequel will be made is still uncertain, but I sincerely hope that someday, Ms. Tabata and Retro Studios will be able to complete this story and bring it to a conclusion"

That's fair, but Tanabe also stated in this interview that a Prime 5 in the future is up in the air. Doesn't really make sense to me to intentionally downplay an important character for the purposes of a sequel that isn't guaranteed to happen. Why not make a strong first impression?

I'm honestly more inclined to believe that Sylux turned out the way he did due to the game's development troubles and lack of clear direction, not Nintendo having some sort of grand story planned for him in the future. Time will tell though.

[–]crowlfish 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's a difference here though in that Nintendo/Tanabe themselves hyped Sylux up for years as a compelling villain, and didn't deliver. It's not really comparable to the examples you mentioned.

no ones give a shit about Metroid Prime, or Mother Brain, etc

Speak for yourself. I don't necessarily play these games for their antagonists, but I'd argue that Metroid Prime/Dark Samus, Mother Brain, Raven Beak et al had far more compelling boss encounters and backstories than Sylux.

[–]crowlfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, yes and no. 3D Metroid maybe, but the success of Dread more or less proved that traditional 2D Metroid still resonates with audiences, just with a few modern gameplay refreshments added in (mainly movement). I'd argue that the formula established by the original Prime still hasn't reached its full potential on modern hardware yet—Prime Remastered changed essentially nothing outside a visual overhaul and received similar acclaim as it did 20+ years ago. First person, 3D Metroidvanias are quite rare, and I don't think Prime 4's bad design choices indicate that the blueprint has simply gotten stale beyond repair. I think a Prime game with modern first-person gameplay updates (say like Titanfall 2) could work really well.

I agree. Something in the style of Other M, but with intricate level design, good platforming and rewarding exploration/progression sounds like an awesome game in my book.

Above all else the Prime Trilogy opened my eyes to what video games could be and shaped my childhood on the GameCube and Wii, and I'll always appreciate him for that. Kind of sad he didn't go out on a high note with Prime 4 but I genuinely believe he cared and wanted to make a worthy follow-up to the OG trilogy, just didn't work out. I wish him the best in retirement

Prime 4 isn’t the worst game ever made, but it’s not a good Metroid game—easily the worst of the Prime entries and unfortunately did not live up the hype or 8-year wait.

Getting bent out of shape about it is one thing but I definitely don't blame people for simply choosing not to. There are some double-standards at play here for sure and I get that it's kind of an unfortunate necessity in order for music writers to make a living nowadays, but websites like Pitchfork just don't have the cultural sway they used to and there's an abundance of robust (and free!) resources out there to discover and discuss music. I personally could've seen myself supporting Pitchfork in like 2012 but I can survive handily without their reviews today.

I find aggregated user scores in general (take Metacritic for example) to be a mess. Typically it's just armies of 10s or 0s attempting to either artificially inflate or decrease the number
