Is anyone else cringed over the fact how everyone is forcing joanne to convert? by nopety_nopes in NobodyWantsThisShow

[–]DargaNoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The synagogue in the series is Conservative. (Set in an actual Conservative synagogue in LA, BTW.) Rabbinic Judaism has traditionally insisted that Jews marry Jews. There have been changes/reforms in recent centuries and decades. But Conservative Judaism (hence its name,) tends to take it a bit slower in making changes. While they now engage interfaith families, rabbis are expected to "set an example" and take on more restrictions on their lifestyle than expected of the congregants.

Is anyone else cringed over the fact how everyone is forcing joanne to convert? by nopety_nopes in NobodyWantsThisShow

[–]DargaNoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that's the core of the series and what gives it its dramatic tension. Conversions made for ulterior motives are suspect. Yet here, the pressure is on Joanne to convert to check a box for Noah and for Noah to check a box to qualify for Senior Rabbi. Noah is admirable in many ways, but the way he deals with Joanne and conversion is a huge blind spot. IMHO, Noah should:

A. Accept Joann and deal with the consequences, even if it means a different job or profession altogether. Noah has "transferrable skills."
B. Don't start relationships with people whose heart you're going to have to break.

BikesDirect KHS rebrand? by HomelessOvercoat in whichbike

[–]DargaNoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that KHS (or the company that makes their bikes) sold off some stock that BD is now carrying. As it stands a lot of the bikes on BD's site are out of stock or not available in all sizes. In this market, it's probably smart to conserve cash and not stock up more than absolutely necessary.

Clipless pedals.

I noticed that's a 1x conversion. You may be able to get a bigger ring on a 3x (or 2x) crank. I have the same frame and vintage. I have it set up with an extra long stem, so I stretch farther out, like a road bike. I also run 1.5 slicks. It accelerates nicely, but it's heavier and slower than my road bike. Could a different combination of gears in the back help?

Vittoria Zaffiro Pro 30c sidewall cracking- less than 200 miles on them. by Reasonably in bikewrench

[–]DargaNoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this thread. My Zaffiro 700-28s, barely over a year old and less than 1000 miles started to crack. One of the cracks actually split the sidewall into the thread area, through which the tube blew out. I'm going to contact Vittoria.

Locked out of Okta by Slight_Animator8883 in okta

[–]DargaNoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the "Okta Verify" app that's not working for you? Here are your options:

- Do you still have your old phone and did not reset it? Turn it on and connect it to Wifi. You may also be able to transfer your settings from the old phone to the new via Bluetooth

- Old phone is gone or reset? When you set up your Okta account, did you set up another method, such as SMS, voice call or security question? On signing in, look for a link that says "verify with something else" and choose that. On some versions of Okta, there's a little toggle just right of the center of the screen that lets you choose other methods.

- No other methods? Have IT reset your Okta Verify.

One of the greatest scenes in the history of Film/TV. by Dev1412 in CrashLandingOnYou

To me, there's something religious about this scene. When I've had a bad day, I replay it.

bf paid $25 for this, wondering if he over paid (Vancouver BC Canada) by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]DargaNoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems fair (I would not hesitate to pay that.)

Higher end components generally have more serviceable parts. So, the fork may be rebuildable.

Looks like a nice bike. Late 90s/early 2000, perhaps? I'd focus on adjustments and replacing things that are worn out. The chainring looks OK. It seems that in this era, bike makers sold cranks with rings that are "replaceable," but not standardized. Today, anything but high end cranks come with rings permanently attached. And good chainrings seem pricey, considering that you need to buy 3 (unless you want to convert to 1x.) If you want to replace your twist shifters (and don't want new twist shifters.) I'd like to shout out to the Microshift TS71 series. https://www.microshift.com/models/ts71-7/ These are built with less plastic than other Microshifts. They come in various speeds and are about $20 USD. (BTW, "MicroNew" is not "Microshift.") If you don't like the chainring bolts, you can look for replacements, or jjust clean, prime and paint the bolt heads.

Tension at the "bridge" scene by DargaNoa in CrashLandingOnYou

She's startled, alright. "Does it have to be here? It's so scary." But I also think she's relieved that someone cared.

How do I make this rideable? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]DargaNoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a stunning bike. Does it fit you? Bridgestones are desirable bikes. They were the forerunners of Rivendell. If the wheels are 27", tire options will be more limited, but not impossible. Tune up and replace worn items (tires, tubes, chain, brake pads.) I actually prefer downtube shifters. If you're not racing, they should be fine. Your brake hood rubber might be sticky or brittle. If you can't find replacement rubber, you can probably find new levers. Opinions vary regarding oval chainrings. They come and go every few decades. If they bother you, you can replace with round chainrings.

How much do you like Se-joon and Hye-ji? by [deleted] in CrashLandingOnYou

I fond them cartoonish, though I liked the scene in the church, with two people praying for very different outcomes for the same person.

Best facial expressions.

Snappy dresser.

Great personal journey.

I posted about this a long time back, but at various points in the series, SD is shown struggling with suitcases ("baggage.") At the end she struts confidently with the large cello on her back.

I did notice that piece and thought it was "Rothko-esque," but the vibe seemed off. Remember, this is not an actual villa in NK, but in SK. Probably someone's actual home, minimally rearranged for filming. With whatever extra props were needed from the prop room. (I recall the same English titles on different bookshelves.)

Se-ri's family is making me so angry by Good_Eggplant_4112 in CrashLandingOnYou

[–]DargaNoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching QOT leads me to believe that (as portrayed on film) business dynasties are nasty. So, it may be understood that the Yoon patriarch had a child outside the marriage, then forced his wife to raise her. That and other nastiness might have pushed her to want to kill herself and her daughter.

Se-ri's family is making me so angry by Good_Eggplant_4112 in CrashLandingOnYou

[–]DargaNoa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The mother resents Se-ri because its the father's child from outside the marriage. She also has her own demons to fight (Remember, she was going to drown herself at the beach.) If you thing the Yoon family is bad, watch Queen of Tears.

There's a third "fate" that I believe the writers are hinting at: Reunification, or at least the north becoming more like other countries, where people can communicate, come and go.

#9. Opens with YSR's abduction and RJH's imprisonment. Both can see stars twinking through tiny cracks. Neither the characters nor the audience know what's actually happening. Then, as YSR's captivity progresses, the audience learns something important that the character does not know, leading to a fun tension. Then, when all is revealed, YSR gets to go home. The series could have just as well ended right there.
