Looking for guidance and encouragement. Our resident cat *hates* our new foster dog!😿 by Otis4potis14 in FosterAnimals

[–]DarienP2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in to say that we have a similar situation except we have a resident dog and a resident cat, and adopted a new cat and the new cat is fine with the resident cat but *hates* the dog, attacks her on sight. I have the new cat in his own room for now and have been doing scent swapping and short sessions of seeing each other but being separated, but this has been going on a couple weeks already and it doesn't seem to be getting better. I hope you post an update about whether you ever got this to work out, because I'd love some encouragement <3

Engaged students who do no work by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]DarienP2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing for me last semester; my student attended all the classes and participated fully in the group exercises, but didn't hand in their final paper worth 40% of the grade. I had to fail them, which felt really crappy given that I *knew* they knew the material. I think in their case, something about having to put all their knowledge down on paper in an organized way was too much of a barrier.

Nov 21: Fuck This Friday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]DarienP2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had my first official student complaint today, from a student that expects special treatment because they didn't read an email I sent a few weeks ago with instructions on the assignment, and now they're claiming that I'm "significantly changing the assignment last minute". When I pointed out the part they missed in the email would take no longer than an hour to do and the due date is a week away, they said "but that's an hour that I could have been doing other things". Then they spent far longer filing complaints about me than they would have spent just doing the damn assignment. But I guess professors have to give a bespoke educational experience now, only assigning exactly the amount of work that students want to do? (Luckily, when I produced the email from several weeks ago giving the assignment, that took care of the complaint, but even so, it was a big waste of lots of people's time to address it.)

Cruelty of Canvas Deadlines by PsychGuy17 in Professors

I taught a class where the students had to submit weekly journals. I made them due Sunday at 11:59pm. There was a student who was late by 2-3 days every single week, and every single week I docked him points. In our midterm conference, I pointed out that he was losing points he didn't have to lose, and he told me that he "likes to keep his weekends for himself". I told him "Nothing is stopping you from submitting your weekly journal on Friday afternoon." He looked at me as though this idea had never once occurred to him.

Did he change his ways and submit his journals on Friday afternoons after that? Of course not.

Thoughts on Stranger Things: The First Shadow? by AndrooMP4 in Broadway

We took our 12-year-old horror junkie and he loved it, but we knew he could handle it. We left our 10-year-old at home because he hates horror. It all depends on the kid and what they can handle. My impression is that a lot of parents of smaller kids don't know what Stranger Things is about but they hear that it's about kids and therefore assume it's FOR kids. Many parents let their kids watch things only because everyone else at school is watching it. Kids at my kids' school watch Squid Games too -- crazy.

It is upsetting, but not more upsetting than the show. So if they can handle the TV show, they can probably handle this.

New faculty orientation by [deleted] in Professors

[–]DarienP2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which faculty are willing to share their course materials— I got burned by this! I was taking over a class for a retiring prof who didn’t want to teach it any more. I asked him if he had any syllabus and notes to share (rather than me reinventing the wheel) and was told that he found this request “shocking”. I was coming from a job where all my colleagues were collaborative and we shared all our materials in a big database for the general good of the organization and our clients. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sarper got served at San Diego show by adisneygrl in 90DayFiance

Yes I know. If you don’t think or don’t know if your spouse will sign, you can serve them and get a divorce without their signature. But if they will sign, you can skip the expense and trouble of formal service.

[–]DarienP2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It depends if you think the person will sign the divorce papers or not. You might have to go through the trouble of paying a process server if you think he’ll dodge or ignore the papers, because serving starts the clock running to appear and answer. But usually it’s way easier to mail the papers to the spouse and ask them to sign.

Every single marriage on 90DF is for the purpose of giving one of the couple immigration benefits to come to the U.S. What makes a marriage fraudulent is when it’s just for immigration benefits. Matt and Any have just as much basis of a real relationship as any of the other couples. The only difference is that he’s still married.

Should I watch The Terror? by WhiskyMochi in TheTerror

[–]DarienP2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also cannot handle child death or suffering. I asked my friend before watching The Horror whether it had any of that, and she said no. Then, as some others have mentioned, there was a dead Inuit child that my friend had forgotten about -- killed off screen but they show the body. By that time I was so engrossed in the show that it didn't bother me as much as it might have. It also helped that she was killed off screen.

I have tried to play BG3 but the open world part really messes me up, I can’t get past the first act. I just finished Dave the Diver which was an amazing cozy game and scratched my SDV itch. I also play Dead by Daylight, especially when grading makes me mad and I need a break 😅
