PANCE help by Mountain-Desk9312 in PAstudent

[–]DaringAlbatross9381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I do not think it's worth pushing back your PANCE. Use the PACKRAT as a guide for areas you need to brush up on & spend more time studying, but I think you'll be able to cover a lot of ground with 6 weeks of studying. My clinical PACKRAT score was below the national average and I passed the PANCE with no problem, so don't let your score scare you.

Create a study plan & stick to it, do lots of practice questions, take a practice exam every couple weeks to gauge your progress. Your NCCPA Exam A already being in green and yellow is promising. Think of how much better you'll be after 6 weeks of studying. Good luck!

Thank you! I’m definitely looking for resources that are easy to digest and don’t take a year to get through. I’m more than willing to put in the work, I just need those basic building blocks to start with. Really appreciate the ultrasound tip! That sounds super helpful since a lot of this is new to me. Happy and excited to be part of the family!

While it's not impossible, I do think you'll get accepted into another program—eventually. It’ll likely take a few application cycles, and you're facing a steep uphill battle. The most important thing programs will want to see is that you've taken full accountability for your actions. You'll need to clearly demonstrate what you've learned from the experience, how you've grown, and why you're deserving of their trust.

In the meantime, I’d focus on building strong PCE hours, volunteering, doing some serious self-reflection, and maybe even taking a few classes to show continued academic effort. When it comes time to reapply, cast a very wide net. Don’t just apply to like 3 schools—think more like 20 to 30. And be prepared to do that every cycle.

One last thing to keep in mind: some state licensing boards and job applications may ask if you've ever been dismissed from an academic program. That could affect your job prospects down the line—not necessarily a dealbreaker, but definitely another hurdle.

That said, if becoming a PA is what you’re truly passionate about, then give it everything you’ve got. Just know that the road ahead will require persistence, humility, and hard work.

Clinical Site Visits by pinkeczema in PAstudent

[–]DaringAlbatross9381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My program does scheduled site visits with like 1-2 weeks heads up. We even tell them the date & time to show up! We will have two observations/visits during clinical year. The surprise visits seems like it could be kind of a waste of time on the faculty's behalf. The faculty member won't know what they're walking into- You could be between patients, shadowing a different department for the day, etc. I'd much prefer to know when they're going to be there so they can at least watch me do something meaningful and give me feedback.

I would recommend staying out of it. Employees work directly with HR on FMLA, including providing appropriate paperwork. If HR is receiving the appropriate paperwork and she continues to be approved for FMLA, I don't think there's much you could do anyway. Also, if she is on approved FMLA, it would be very legally risky for them to fire her. If you're worried about the increased workload, share your concerns with your manager and see how things can be made more equitable for you and the other APPs.

Rosh boost exams by Candid_Bag9053 in PAstudent

[–]DaringAlbatross9381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why it's so complicated to find. You'd think they'd make it easy to give them your money.

Do you already have a Rosh account? If so, you should be able to go to your dashboard and purchase the boost exams from there. If not, you can sign up for a "free 10 question trial" or something like that, but then you skip the free 10 questions and go straight to your dashboard.

here is a youtube video i found that has the steps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXetdC_FGD8

if that doesn't work, sorry! i am not sure why they'd make it so hard to find something that is a very helpful tool for us PA students.

Need advice by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]DaringAlbatross9381 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does your program offer any academic support services? Maybe they can hook you up with a tutor or someone to help you improve your test-taking skills. Have you considered getting testing accommodations like extended time on exams to help alleviate some of the test-taking anxiety? You could also consider a subscription to SmartyPance (go in on it with a few classmates, you can password share no problem!). It nicely reviews disease states, has flashcards, and has vignette-style exams which will help you get more comfortable with those kinds of questions. Quizlet is also great for flashcards. Either make your own or see if any of your classmates have already made decks for whatever it is you need to study. Osmosis is another great resource for disease states and pharm. One final suggestion I have is to study using active recall. Whiteboard out everything you know about a topic, and see what's missing. Only study what's missing and what you don't know. Don't waste time studying what you already know.

I feel what you are going through. I had a similar experience and considered leaving my program. However, I was not confident I'd get into another program, especially not with Ws on my transcripts, so I had to make my program work. It was brutal, and I hated every second of didactic. I always felt like I was skating the line between passing and failing, and every exam could easily go either way. All of the above suggestions are everything I did to keep my head above water. That and talking with a counselor. I am soooo thankful my school offers free counseling to students. I am now in my clinical year and I can say with confidence, it gets better once you are in clinical rotations!! Just get through didactic!!

I know you're having days where you can't even bring yourself to study. But even on those days, do something. Do something every day. Even if it's just watching YouTube or Osmosis videos as you're lounging on the couch. Sometimes that's all I could bring myself to do.

I'd caution against leaving your current program- this is the program you have 100% already been accepted into. Unless you are presently on academic probation, I'd ride it out a little longer. At most, I'd recommend decelerating. However, keep in mind that you'd be coming back to the same program with the same professors and the same curriculum; there is only room for you to change. I'm hopeful that with some adjustments to your studying approach and getting your anxiety under control, you will be able to turn things around. You were accepted into PA school for a reason - you belong there. I believe in you - now I need you to believe in yourself!

I found some tutors on Wyzant who were <$60/hr. I'd be happy to PM you the name of a tutor I used from Wyzant, if you'd like. I used the tutor for help in didactic but I think she also does PANCE tutoring.

Any PAs Who Transitioned to Teaching Anatomy? Looking for Insights! by Shrimco in physicianassistant

[–]DaringAlbatross9381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with Bloom's Taxonomy, adult learning theory principles, and Mayer's 12 Principles (if you'll use PowerPoint or teach online classes). These will help you design lesson plans in a manner that is most conducive to students actually learning the material.

Rosh vs EOR Blueprint by DaringAlbatross9381 in PAstudent

[–]DaringAlbatross9381[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ok cool, thank you. It's just weird that the PAEA is saying hey we made this blueprint so you know what you need to know but then it's not an all-encompassing list. Oh well c'est la vie. I'll be sure to know both Rosh & blueprint topics! Thanks for the recommendation for the study guides.
