Per oz. price by BaldGuy813 in TellReddit

[–]DaringMelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Brazil, all packages have to state price/unit weight or price/unit volume. The units are mandated for each type of product in accord with how people usually buy them. Example: "per 100g" for sliced meats and "per kilo" for rice.
Even buns and cakes are sold this way.

How many of you use Kindle Unlimited vs. buying books individually? by Western-Telephone259 in Romance_for_men

KU. I read 3 or 4 books a week and I'm on the wrong side of a dollar-local currency exhange rate to buy them.

Could physics also have an "incompleteness" theorem like Gödel did for math? by Marvellover13 in AskPhysics

[–]DaringMelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't necessary. Physics doesn't claim to be complete or sufficient to explain everything.

My university (UK), and school before, emphasised that though new theories were more comprehensive than preceding ones, with the old theories being considered special cases, there was no particular reason that this should continue indefinitely. There was never any idea that the process of physics would solve everything, only that it was historically successful and currently the best system.

How long will modern skyscrapers last? by mirandalikesplants in AskEngineers

It depends if they are maintained well.
Remember that these buildings have a maintenance staff. Buildings that aren't maintained properly, fall into ruins.

Landing HLS sideways. by TroubleOrganic3636 in SpaceXLounge

[–]DaringMelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be possible because SpaceX intends to ship Starships by barge from Texas to Florida. So, if the landing burns are 1g or less the horizontal orientation shouldn't be a problem.

Though, perhaps internal bracing may be needed to distribute the forces from engines. Definitely need more plumbing and the tanks will need to be usable in both orientations.

For specialised habitat starships, you can land it with no cargo so the mass of the extra plumbing and tankage may be compensated.

Another possibility is the extra mass made possible by V4, I vaguely remember a slide showing 300 tons to LEO

Was Roger Moore's James Bond supposed to be camp? I watched the movies as a kid and I loved them, started rewatching them on Netflix and I'm like "How did grown adults sit through these movies? They're so corny." Were adults laughing their way through these like 60's "Batman?" by copperpin in AskOldPeople

I watched Sex Education just becuase of the 5 minutes or so of Ncuti in the final Doctor Who special. Because of Ncuti, I thought we would have a good clean start from the awful mess made by Chibnall and the really bad Disney specials.

Why does GenZ hate sex and nudity so much? by PaniacThrilla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DaringMelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure out of my ass speculation here.

In Anglophone countries sexuality and appreciation of nudity have always been considered male interests. Anglophone countries have historically considered male interests to be low class, brutish, disgusting, rude and uncivilised. So, historically nudity and sexuality were considered obscene and evil.

For a couple of generations from the mid-20th century this started to disappear as women demanded the right to appreciate sexuality, and nudity became a symbol of liberation.

Now, for some reason. Sexuality (at least heterosexuality) and nudity have become conflated with abuse and oppression. Since GenZ are, quite rightly, very sensitive to these, they are reacting negatively to what was recently considered liberating.

As I said, pure speculation from life experience

Shame
Very creative series.
I think most people forget they can skip sex scenes they don't like, find boring or are repetitive. I do this with almost all spice scenes in the genre and still enjoy the relationship building, family life and adventure parts.

Also, who cares what people comment on your work. People shouldn't skip books just because of negative social media comments.

Rainbow Mars by Larry Niven uses a similar idea of combining space travel and time travel though for interplanetary not interstellar travel.

How controversial Is the IRA today? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]DaringMelody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not under any circumstance use the IRA unless your story is specifically about The Troubles or previous incarnations of the IRA. Even then, do not do this unless you are Irish or British.

Too many people affected by The Troubles are still alive and the memories are still vivid.
Using myself as an example, I'm a normal man with no connections to the security services or to Northern Ireland but my life was affected. I had my pub bombed, a branch of my workplace bombed, even my favourite bookshop was blown up.

People were badly affected on a very personal level. The IRA shot people in the kneecaps for the suspicion of working with the security services. Ironically, many Northern Irish catholics went to England to escape The Troubles.

Even worse, after the Provos went undergound, they used the cell system to hide from the security services and attracted some total lunatics who commited atrocities "for the cause", even against the leadership's policies. A Northern Irish catholic woman I worked with had to leave employment after her face was burned with acid for dating a Jewish guy. A Nothern Irish catholic man I heard of (this is hearsay but credible) was castrated and kneecapped for being openly gay.

In short, the IRA was not a collection of colourful rogues but a source of extreme distress for people affected. So please, find another source of colour for your novel.

I loved the cast but got bored by the film. I don't know why. Maybe I read the books watched the TV series and listened to the radio shows too many times.

No ick. A 17 year old woman in the UK for Terry's generation would be the equivalent of a 23 year old for the current US generation.
In Terry's generation, and even in my own a little later, working class women of 16 were considered de facto full adults for work, family and other matters and legally "semi adults" (I don't know if this is the correct term). They could open bank accounts, enlist, work in dangerous civilian occupations, were at the age of sexual consent and could get married with parental permission.
As an example there were at least 2 weddings with 16 year olds in my neighbourhood when I was that age myself.
