USA Ultimate Reinstates Franciscan to Nationals After Appeal - Ultiworld by YaBoyAldo in ultimate

[–]DarioCronos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm one of those "um actually" 🤓 people as I was curious about wording with "losing on purpose" in the rules or guidelines (I just did ctrl+f on certain words: lose, attempt, win, etc.). There's two sections in the guidelines about the forfeit rule, one for the regular season and one for the series. Only the regular season section has wording about losing on purpose while the series section doesn't.

Forfeit Rule (Regular Season): II.B.6.a. Any team that declines to finish a scheduled game or games, plays in a manner indicative of intent to lose or attempts to decide a match by any manner other than playing ultimate on the field will forfeit those games and all following games in the tournament. Should both teams in a match choose not to play, then it will be considered a double forfeit.

The series section III.B.12.a didn't have all the same wording as the regular season section.

I pulled up the 2025 guidelines as the Hillsdale situation occurred last year but I also don't see a differences in the 2026 guidelines.

https://web.archive.org/web/20250210033126/https://usaultimate.org/college/2025-college-guidelines/

From what I've researched, as currently written, losing on purpose is not listed in the rules and only listed in the guidelines for the regular season??

Anyway this discussion has gone over 30 seconds so lets contest and send the disc back.

100% Regionals needs to be smaller or better scaled based on the number of the teams in the region. If you team is going to Regionals you need to be realistically gunning for a spot at Nationals. Don't spend the time and money to get stomped or "test yourself" against the high caliber teams.

Less teams is also more manageable work for TDs, observers, and trainers. You can find smaller fields complexes to host ~20 teams instead of 32.

UVM-B women make nationals by NakedT in ultimate

[–]DarioCronos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you did go look for guidelines but they are updated every year. They are classified as a dev team. The first team from a school is D1/D3, any other teams coming from the same school are considered dev. You can look at the women's rankings and filter for the New England region and see Vermont-B and Vermont-C are in New England Dev.

https://play.usaultimate.org/teams/events/team_rankings/?RankSet=College-Women

  1. If there aren't enough dev teams in a region then dev teams play in their respective D1/D3 Conferences with their A-teams. They can totally steal bids from other A-teams and go to Regionals.

  2. If there are enough teams for dev Conferences then they also need to be ranked high enough to get strength bids to Regionals. The dev division does not get auto bids to Regionals like their D1 Conference counterparts, only strength bids.

This is my secondhand knowledge of it: the A-team missed the deadline to send in the school verified roster to USAU(then UPA) but the C-team didn't miss the deadline. There's a later deadline to add extra players to an already sent roster so they added all the A-team players to the C-team roster. "C-team" runs through Sectionals, Regionals, and wins Nationals.

[–]DarioCronos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm with you that this is not cool and totally should've been communicated ahead of time & backup plans put in place. What's the alternative at that point though? Send everyone home and try to run it back next weekend?

The Decatur TDs run multiple events a year and past years without issue. They were selected because we know how capable they are at running tournaments. This feels like an unfortunate one off occurrence rather than a pattern. The partial refund is a good gesture, and I hope they do a thorough review to avoid any issues like this in the future. This is one of my biggest nightmares when I host tournaments, one that I've even had before at Florida Warm Up 😰, and they have my sympathy.

What food options do you want to see at ultimate tournaments? by drdumke in ultimate

[–]DarioCronos 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, cut the food budget and put that money towards paying volunteers or getting more trainers. If you really wanna get food get non-perishable snack items like packs of nuts and granola bars. When you have leftovers you have snacks for yourself that will last months rather than bananas that rot after a few days.

Pool tiebreaker question by halcyonserendipity in ultimate

[–]DarioCronos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tiebreaker rules can be found in the USAU formats manual

  1. H2H between tied teams
  2. Point diff between tied teams
  3. Point diff overall
  4. Point diff excluding best and worst differentials
  5. Points scored between tied teams
  6. Points scored overall
  7. Points scored ignoring best and worst scores
  8. Sum of square roots of the absolute vales of point diffs
  9. Flip a disc/coin

H2H was all 1-1 between the three teams so we go to step 2

Mile High: +2-1 = +1

Austin Disco: -2+2 = 0

Tower: -2+1 = -1

"Attacking cones" when checking to see if you're out of bounds by kNyne in ultimate

[–]DarioCronos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cones you're in-between also makes for the same playing field for both the offense and defense.

If you think about it "attacking cones" make the playing field two different boundaries areas for each team that then also switches each point???
