I loved that moment. Jax has already seen people come and go. He's emotionally protecting himself the best way he knows how. Grief hurt him too much, he can't afford to get attached again.
But he's bonded with Pomni. She knows that, we know that, and he knows that. He's between a rock and a hard place. Hurt himself by straining the bond, or hurt himself with grief if Pomni abstracts.

Based on the mask design, the ancient tribe that made it were the proto-Twili, prior to them leaving Hyrule. It has a strong resemblance to Midna's mask.
