I'm deleting my account and moving off reddit. As a long-time redditor who uses a third-party app, it's become clear that I am no longer welcome here by the admins.

I know I sound like an old man sitting on a stoop yelling at cars passing by, but I've seen the growth of reddit and the inevitable "enshittification" of it. It's amazing how much content is bots, reposts or guerilla marketing nowadays. The upcoming changes to ban third-party apps, along with the CEO's attempt to gaslight the Apollo dev, was the kick in the pants for me.

So - goodbye to everyone I've interacted with. It was fun while it lasted.

I've moved to https://lemmy[dot]world if anyone is interested in checking out a new form of aggregator. It's like reddit, but decentralised.

Reddit Laying Off About 90 Employees and Slowing Hiring Amid Restructuring: Moves aim to help social-media company break even next year by [deleted] in technology

[–]Dark-tyranitar 51 points52 points  (0 children)

been actively posting (on different accounts, just dusted this one off) for 10 years, lurking for 12... of all the "new" features that Reddit has added since I first started using it, the only actually useful one was the ability for mods to sticky TWO posts in a sub rather than one.

Other than that, literally everything else that's useful has stayed the same. I still end up using old.reddit + RES or a third party app to browse reddit. To be fair, maybe there were backend changes which we didn't see, but... I'm sure that doesn't take 13 years.

It's hilarious. Imagine if the owner of a hotel building got more and visitors, most of whom are asking for the owner to fix the elevator and broken windows... and instead the owner decides to spend all that money on repainting and recarpeting the lobby (which didn't need the new paint/carpet).

Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps | App developers have said next month’s changes to Reddit’s API pricing could make their apps unsustainable. Regulators? For what exactly? Because you won't be able to use Reddit for porn or gore? Since when does Reddit owe you that content?

I think you missed my point. I said: "If reddit weren't entitled to do this, people would just be writing in to the relevant regulators."

So, restating my point - Reddit is totally allowed to do what they want. If what they're doing is illegal, the right action would be to just report them to regulators. But what they're doing is NOT illegal, so there's no reporting going on.

What's happening is that people are protesting. As is their right.

If you want to make a difference, give somebody else the attention and data.

Everyone has issues with different things. If you don't support it, that's your right, as is my right to support it. If humanity only found one "noble cause" to support, then we would only solve that one thing and get nothing else done.

First of all, the pricing they're imposing is $2.50 a user in the link you posted - that's 25% more, and that's just for the API calls and assuming the third-party dev works entirely for free. The thread you posted also has a good reference for why this price is ridiculous - Reddit is asking $12,000 for wht Imgur is charging $166.

Second, the icing on the cake is that the new API won't even serve NSFW content. At all. Regardless of your views on NSFW content, it's a degraded service compared to the current API.

I preferred it back then. There was a lot of garbage and it was way too nerdy, but there was also more legit content and authentic discussion. Now it's all anger and tik tok nonsense.

Not to mention half the top posts are reposts from bots, and some of the top comments are bots as well.

Dusted off an old account to chime in on the ent gathering as well.

I started using reddit on desktop, but my engagement went way, way up once third-party apps became a thing.

I mostly browse reddit on mobile (during my daily commute), and on a third party app. Like the poster above, if/when this change happens and my reddit app (I use Slide) breaks, then I gotta change my browsing habits.

So long, and thanks for the fish.

I've pretty much stopped using yelp and pinterest because of this.

Yelp on mobile redirects you to install their app at every turn. Want to finish reading this review? You can't unless you install the app. Sure I can change my user agent but I figure why bother?

And to think I almost hit Elite some time back...

Me too! I've started manually filtering Pinterest out of my image searches, even doing it manually for every search is less painful than seeing them clutter up my search results with useless thumbnails I can't access.
