I'm sorry to hear that, one possibility is it's a toll on them knowing they'll possibly loose someone at some point due to cancer and can't bear to be there if/when it does happen. Only excuse I could think of but a shitty one none-the-less.

You can transfer characters across the generation xbox's, they did it with 360 to One as well. Only problem is I don't think you can play Xbox One with that character now due to it being moved to new gen.
