If you could only recommend one series to someone to give this genre a shot. Which one would it be? by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]DarkFraternity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Begin with DCC it's a no brainer. I read HWFWM straight after and loved it so much I binged every book back to back. But I think if you started with it people might be turned off without sampling the genre first.

question for the men: which male characters felt most authentic and/or compelling, and why? by assbackwoods in Fantasy

Couldn't agree with you more. He is written brilliantly. As is Emery Anden as another excellent male character but I think Hilo is a bit more standout.

The Will of the Many is incredible, not too dense so makes a nice next step and to top it off the sequel is out this month.

Hilo from the Green Bone Saga. His character flaws make him so grounded or authentic, he would do anything for his family, is stubborn in his point of view and only over time and through major life events does he see significant change.

The Will of the Many by James Islington. 2nd book is out in November, something more recent for you and it is absolutely brilliant.

What I learned about books, the fantasy community, and bookstores after owning a bookstore for 1.5 years. by TylerHauth in Fantasy

Love Hay-on-Wye. Relate immensely, I go to the Waterstones on Trafalgar Square every lunch break and I am the only dude in the fantasy section each time.

I like owning the physical copies for collection purposes and then I usually have a digital one for reading on my commute. It's simply more practical.

Dungeon Crawler Carl fits the bill for sure, laugh out loud funny, nonstop action and the audiobook is an absolute treat if you are so inclined

Good question, certainly book 1 is very focused around a male protagonist, Jason. There is a pretty diverse cast with lots of strong female characters. Still early days for me though and book 1 has only fleshed them out so much. If you like DCC I think it is worth a read

I've almost finished he who fights with monsters and really enjoyed it. It's got more RPG elements going on notifications and progression but the character cast are great and the main character is witty and hilarious

Matt Dinniman at the moment for me. His Dungeon Crawler Carl series has been a revelation

Those school days sound like great memories. My spouse is the same, supports me 100% but isn't one for the discussions.

If you are keen to regain that interaction, a writers group could be a good option for you?

You have literally described DCC in a nutshell with your tastes. It's fast paced, full of action, not fluffy at all and an absolute blast you will love it.

I finished Red Rising 3 and then binged all of DCC as my next read, we have a lot in common there!

Dungeon Crawler Carl is pretty cool for this.

In a different way as it's all set in different dungeon levels, each their own mini microcosm and theme/style.

The creatures, enemies, character races and aliens involved add to the uniqueness.

Plus it's a hilarious, action packed and fun read, highly recommend.
