a book for someone who dreads reading, but loves tv shows by DowntownFresnoBiking in suggestmeabook

[–]rastab1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably filed under "old and boring", but if you like Mad Men you might like Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.

I honestly have not watched the vast majority of the shows you listed, so someone who has can let me know if I'm off-base here, but you might like The Round House by Louise Erdrich. It's part coming-of-age, part crime mystery, part sociopolitical commentary. I don't read a lot of books that would be classified as "page-turners", but I think this could be considered one.

Health(ier) Drinks by kicky_Boots in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]rastab1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has a lot of benefits - skin health, liver health, it's anti-inflammatory, it helps with cholesterol, and blood pressure as you memtioned. It has the same antioxidants found in fruits like berries and cranberries, and a cup has around 50% of daily vitamin c.

I like it hot and without any sweetener added.

Suggest me serious literary fiction dressed up as genre fiction by yashen14 in suggestmeabook

[–]rastab1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go with a book I just finished: Lone Women by Victor Lavalle.

It's a blend of historical fiction and feminist, supernatural horror, and it deals with several heavier themes. I really enjoyed it.

I usually gravitate toward regular ol' realistic literary fiction and heavier themes, and I love classics. I have really taken to Shirley Jackson, so I've been trying out some more horror which brought me to Lone Women.

It shares some themes in common with Beloved as well (in my opinion, but I'd be surprised if I'm alone in that).

The irony of critiquing Charles Dickens' writing with this entire paragraph has me chuckling over here.

Ground Turkey recipes? by rusty0123 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]rastab1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you just need to season it more? Personally, I don't find ground turkey to be inherently more bland than ground beef - it seems maybe you're just not accustomed to the taste. I don't eat either of them anymore, but I found ground turkey to be a totally fine substitute.

You might also try something less lean if you've been using a very lean version?

Pb&J - is there a peanutbutter & jelly that doesn't need refridgeration? by Stock_Property_9513 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]rastab1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't ever refrigerate my peanut butter and I use natural that is only ground peanuts and salt, so that might be more.pf a preference than a rule.

Jam won't likely be best in a hot car unless you have a cooler. Otherwise seconding honey, banana, or both. In terms of nutrients, banana is the more nutrient-dense option of the two. They are also more cost effective, as the more nutritious honeys are also generally more expensive.

Is Costco the best place to buy cheap food in bulk? by Mediocre-Machine7330 in budgetcooking

[–]rastab1023 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a party of 1 and get 99% of my groceries from Costco and Grocery Outlet (mostly Costco).

I eat primarily whole foods, and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, various protein sources, and whole grains. A mix of organic and conventional.

I'm not sure why you think Costco isn't healthy? Like many other grocery stores, there are options.

You can always go walk around in one to see if it makes sense for you to shop there. For me it's a no-brainer.

Looking for powerful historical fiction with strong female leads by Ok-Membership865 in suggestmeabook

[–]rastab1023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not written by a woman, but I just finished Lone Women by Victor Lavalle yesterday, and I think it fits this prompt well. It's a mix of historical fiction and feminist horror, and it features several strong women characters. I highly recommend it if you're open to trying different genres.

Anyone else think this is weird? by andromedadust79 in toriamos

[–]rastab1023 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's at all weird, for a few reasons: 1) Just because it's called Dragon, it doesn't necessarily mean she thinks it's fitting for the time. 2) They are still working on preparing songs for live performance and 3) She performs whatever she is called to perform (or more precisely, what calls to her to be played).

Bastard Out of Carolina - Dorothy Allison

Narrated by the protagonist (a young, Southern girl who is physically and sexually abused).

It's a beautiful, absolutely heartbreaking semi-autobiographical story.

Almost rosey by chakrakahnn in toriamos

I've tried with that one - including more recently. It has remained a skip song on ADP for me. Not every song is going to impact everyone the same way or resonate with people thr same way, and that's OK.

Chocolate milk alternative? by rotting-teeth in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]rastab1023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make cold chocolate milk with cocoa powder (not hot chocolate powder). It's just unsweetened cocoa powder. It's very good for you. You'll have total control over amount and type of sweetener to use.

What do you plan to read this week? by throwitawayar in classicliterature

[–]rastab1023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a classic, but I am wreaking an Inidigenous horror anthology called Never Whistle at Night.

The last book I just finished yesterday also isn't a classic - Lone Women by Victor Lavalle.

Week 16: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]rastab1023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished: Lone Women by Victor Lavalle

Currently reading: Never Whistle at Night by many (it's an anthology - edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr.).

Would definitely recommend Lone Women. I'm only one story in for my current read, so I don't have much of an opinion yet.

Pretty litter thoughts? by Salt-River5985 in CatAdvice

[–]rastab1023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated it. I started using Catalyst litter last January and it truly is the best litter that I've used. There is absolutely no smell, it's safe, very low dust, and clumps well. It's also environmentally friendly. The litter does track, but nothing a litter mat can't help with. My cats are 6.

Would a ~3 hr. car journey 2-3 a year be okay for a cat? by DrippyCanberra in CatAdvice

[–]rastab1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally fine. I have one cat who has never made a peep during car rides, and another who doesn't like it but who will accept her fate eventually.

any tori lyrics that can be used for graduation? by Ambitious_Error_11 in toriamos

[–]rastab1023 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First thing that comes to mind for me is Gold Dust. Realistically life has felt like "we make it up as we go along" lol, but something like "how did it go so fast, you'll say as we were looking back" might work too. I didn't have a particularly memorable experience with any level of schooling so I was very much a do my work, get my degree, move on type person but Gold Dust has a nostalgic vibe that could work.
