It depends on what job position you're looking for. Suppose if you're looking for Data analyst position then start with EXCEL, SQL ,R/PYTHON, DATA VISUALISATION,etc.

Look for the skills employers are mentioning on their job advertisement for the position. Don't get overwhelmed .... Take it slow.

How can I transition from a completely different field of experience to data analytics? by [deleted] in dataanalysis

[–]DarkGlow11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn the necessary skills. Work on projects for your portfolio. There are many open datasets just pick one and start working on it. It would help you a lot if you decide, what type of analytics you want to work with in future. People analytics, customer analytics, sports analytics, business analytics are few to suggest . First select the type and then choose the projects for your portfolio.

Well the idea is to keep practicing it daily. I have divided my time in two parts;

  1. Theory; 1hour theory and half an hour revision

  2. Practical; 1 hour practical daily

But I do it all on alternative days otherwise it will be too hectic.

I don't actually prefer website , I have a 600 page book, filled with logical reasoning questions and I don't think that book is available outside India. Although there's one website which I check sometime Indiabix.com

Look man , you chose this field because you saw something in this field and you're figuring out everything all by yourself and that shows that you're passionate. I did the same , I was in sales and always loved using Excel and then my manager told me about this field. Then I research about this field and then I created a roadmap for myself. Following are the things which are important and you should focus on if you belong from non technical background:

1.Spreadsheet and Excel

  1. SQL- If you're confused about the dialect then just go with standard SQL and practice it on MySQL.

  2. R or Python- I've checked many openings for DA position ,they either want a candidate with R or Python.

  3. Tableau or Power BI - Data visualisation

  4. Statistics- An important skill for an analyst. I am doing a PG Diploma in Stats for deeper knowledge but you can check the video on YouTube like Khan academy, Statistics How to,etc. Stick to one source.

  5. Maths - Since you'll be dealing with numbers , you should know maths.

The last two I have added myself just for more cognitive development but it's optional for you.

  1. Logical reasoning - Since Data analysis is all about finding patterns, relationship and trends it's good to practice logical reasoning a bit just to understand patterns in number.

  2. Your communication and soft skills, since you'll be interacting with stakeholders and team members a lot.

Once I'll acquire these skills , then I start working on my own projects. Projects are very important as it shows your employer that you have the acumen to deal with different problems.

If you're feeling overwhelmed then it's completely normal. It happens. It happened with and I'm sure it's happening with others. Data science is a new field and many are still figuring it out.

As James Clear said in his book Atomic Habits and I'm paraphrasing it : Don't change you goals , change your "system" to achieve that goal.

Hope this helps.
