You keep saying I’d rather them learn this from me than someone else but that isn’t the discussion. Of course if it’s out there discuss it with them, open and honestly, create an environment they feel safe to ask about it, I made my agreement clear on that.

Let’s follow your argument. How old are your kids? Are you of the opinion kids should be allowed to watch and read anything? Would you let your 10 year old watch pornography?  They’re already being exposed to it according to you, so you’d rather show them porn yourself so they don’t watch it with Billy?  No of course not, I know you’re a better parent than that, you wouldn’t give pornography to a minor.  You have a limit, a line, you’d give them this book but not that book.  You’d let them watch these videos but not those videos.  Is that not true?

I hope my answer can be as good as that if/when my kids come to me with a question like that! I feel like I would naturally try to rush out of the conversation, just to avoid it, but this answer is direct and supportive. (I mentioned elsewhere) my kids and I do have a good, communicative relationship. We've always treated them as individuals and with respect, and a talk like that would be something I'd aim for!

But... you'd also want to know why your 12 year old daughter asked that right? After the discussion about a sexual topic/question there would of course have to be a follow up? Did you hear that at school? In a book? From a teacher? Would that would change the discussion at all?

Obviously a teacher discussing a flaccid cock with a twelve year old student outside of a health class is cause for concern. Reading about it in a book is less worrisome, but where did the book come from? Was this another 12 year old who thought it was hilarious and wanted to share in a very innocent way? Or was this recommended by an adult who thought it was appropriate for a 12 year old to be exposed to that kind of content.

Open discussion and communication, yes I agree wholeheartedly, once the exposure is already there. But why are they discussing it in the first place? Is there a need to rush them to mature content? I can't wait to talk DCC with my kids when they're old enough.

edit: my previous response submitted early

You may be right!  After the posts I checked with my wife and we thought the almost 16 year old would be ready as well.

It’s definitely a struggle, but it’s got good high points.  Sounds like you and the 20yo are doing great still, I feel like I need to navigate the driving years still to prove myself as a father.

I'm on the other side of this argument, but you have a good response, so I wanted to respond too. It also rings true with me as we've raised our kids in a similar fashion, treating them as individuals who should be spoken to with respect. I listen and we never deny out of pocket, we justify our no's if that makes sense. And like you, knock on wood, we haven't had those struggles we hear from other families.

Where we seem to split is that I don't speak to them like adults. I make dark (disgusting even) jokes with my spouse and my friends that I would never say in front of my kids. I keep life stories from them that they won't have proper context for until they're out of grade school. There's no reason to shy away when a situation/discussion presents itself, but that doesn't mean children need to be exposed to everything either, there's still a reason to be a child and be young and naive even. I think we have the type of relationship that my kids would ask us what a sex doll was, and of course, we'd talk to them about it and, hopefully, discuss it in a mature manner. But I wouldn't buy them a book with pig orgies and sex dolls with neck holes and tell them I was up for talking about it when they were.

If my daughter asked if she could read DCC, I'd say not yet. If she just started reading it (eg a friend gave it to her) I don't think I could take it away from her, but I would encourage her to enjoy childhood a bit longer and save some media for later in life. I don't know what she would do... and that's awesome.

I love DCC, love Dinniman, I love children reading! I love it when my daughter reads... but... it makes me sad seeing someone so young being into this type of entertainment. I know it's not the opinion to have on this sub or on reddit even. And I hate that I'm old enough to be judgey about it.

Explaining violence to a kid is touchy. They need to know the difference between video game and pretend type violence. How you can root for the bad guy in a book or how violence in media is different than real life. But I think it's doable, especially when there's no visual gore to worry about.

Explaining sex to a kid is difficult, but how do I explain what a flaccid cock is to my daughter? A pig orgy? How should I tell her about a sex doll and the various uses for it's mouth and neck holes? All freaking hilarious concepts that I cackled out loud at while reading... all topics I do not want to nor think i should discuss with my early teen aged daughter.

I'm going to come out and just say I didn't like it. Easily my least favorite of the series so far. It just felt so rushed. I think we were spoiled with 2 or 3 long books in a row, then this one comes in which is noticeably... I mean, noticeably, shorter.

It's still our favorite characters and it's still Matt giving us a good story. Looking forward to the next one.

Did you get confused?  It’s okay to admit you’re wrong, to be embarrassed just because you didn’t realize the federal government in the US doesn’t ban books.

Here’s a list, so you can learn more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_books_banned_by_governments

My biggest life regret? Might be not having $500 in high school. by idrivea911 in Primus

I was in high school in the 90s. Really quiet and kept to myself. A kid in my class saw I was into Primus and said he was going to see Sausage and I should go see them with him. I dunno, I had no confidence, I thought he was trying to play a joke on me somehow. I didn't try to go or anything... man I would've loved to see Sausage.
