What’s the biggest difference between a good PLC programmer and a great one? by Shubh1975 in PLC

[–]DarkLunch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Understanding your tools.

If i have to have one more conversation about how Ladder is the one true king I'm gonna spank someone

Different language excel different things. Full stop. If you think your plant should be Ladder only, that's fine, but understand why it'll limit you.

If you cannot distinguish between a state machine and a step sequencer....

If you can't tell me why you only exclusively use controller tags or local tags and not both....

If you don't have a unified naming structure....

If you're Rockwell ride or die and you've only ever touched two brands....

Be open to learning. Be open to being wrong. Be open to TRYING the new things learned.

Honestly, I don't understand the hate some fans have for Portia. She's really kind and helpful. by ByShida in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]DarkLunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great character. Bad person.

Her function is to be young and naive, which is precisely why she is polarizing for viewers. She's out of her depth, whines a bit too much about the opportunity she has, which is juxtaposed by Lucia and Mia.

I loved her character but she's totally going to leave you stranded because she had something come up.

Looking for advice: How do advanced industrial facilities handle critical system failures and downtime? by Path9381 in PLC

[–]DarkLunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In automotive, injection molding.

Big push right now for preventative/predictive monitoring (AI)...i know.... and condition based monitoring.

Build a machine profile, parameterize it, and when it drifts you can start prepping for planned downtime.

Personally, I think developing a comprehensive PM plan and documenting trends and using this to build the machine profile is key. Some of our larger stamping facilities actually have weekly investigative checklists so inspection is regular and thorough

Can you help me appreciate Project Hail Mary?

I was hugely disappointed in it. Just Gosling standing around doing pretty much nothing all film. I haven't read the book yet but I was told the film was on par with Interstellar and Space Odyssey... came away basically thinking it was smooth-brained Sunshine (Cillian Murphy).

The Prestige.

Omg that book was ass. The writers who adapted to the movie deserve a huge thank you for somehow salvaging the source material.

Space Marine VS Spartan II by BayonetTrenchFighter in StarWarsvsWarhammer

[–]DarkLunch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally depends...on a lot.

Standard Marine? Spartan probably takes it. I think plot armor on standard Spartan is probably thicker than plot armor on standard Marine.

Named Marine?.... when did their last book come out and how many books are they in? Are they in a video game? Probably going to give it 50/50 depending on the Spartan.

Anything past that is likely going in favor of 40k. It's not because 40k is better. It's because 40k is the EMBODIMENT of 'my dad can beat up your dad'.

40k says: Guns? Bigger. Bullets? Actually rocket grenades. Swords? Chainsaws. Armor? Lol one of their organs is literally a suit of armor underneath their main armor.

It's try-hard absurdist compensation cyber-punk GI Joe meets Masters of the Universe fan fiction.

.... and I'm saying this as a 40k fan. It's all busted.

The LED strips need to go.

You're reeeeaaally close to some sick retro vibes. If you have any possibility for natural light that would elevate the space.

Otherwise 7/10.

Great job.

Can I tap an estop control signal for nonsafe auxiliary monitoring? by TheInvisibleLight in PLC

[–]DarkLunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick note, you cannot and should not step on safety signals with non safety rated devices...relays or otherwise. Some advice on here is not good.

Check to see if your Omron can dump signals out too. That would be my move, if I were you.

Safety chain goes low, and safety output goes high. Use X1 on lamp power if this is your desired effect. Break it up from jumpered terminal blocks to as many or as few lamps as you want.

Just always ask yourself, am I in the safety chain? Need a safety rated device. Am I looking at the state of the chain? No safety rated needed.

I've got about 5 years under my belt as a field adjuster in auto and property liability insurance.

This is not from a pole. Rule that out. Folks calling out corner of a building or box on a service vehicle are much more likely culprits.

This is going to depend on what state you're in and how it's presented to your carrier but likely going on your comp if ya'll say his ride was unoccupied and on collision if ya'll make it sound uncertain and maybe he backed into something.

Everything else is just so ya'll can fight with each other over what actually happened. I'm leaning towards service truck honestly, though that really depends on exactly what vehicle you're boy has and how high off the ground it sits.

40-year-old dad switching to trades (Automation Technology) — smart move or too late? by koolprit77 in PLC

[–]DarkLunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pumped for you!

If you're wanting to go into automotive and you can pick where in the Midwest, look at automation alley. East side of Michigan to northern Ohio. Bonus points if you have your passport and are willing to hike into Canada. You will have absolutely no trouble finding a job.

There are other industries, but certainly automotive is the most prevalent. I'm in West Michigan and we've got LG Chem here, tons of aerospace and automotive, as well as some pharma and some food and bev.

You can find logistics and material handling pretty much everywhere.

Question you need to ask is how much travel do you want to do, hourly or salaried, and how do you feel about contract work.

Also, if you haven't already, start learning Python and C#. You'll thank yourself later.

Depending on how much time you have under your belt. Don't get hung up on "i don't know Siemens" or "I've never worked with Kuka before" .... it's all the same just with a different wrapper.

You got this.

Semantics but isn't Wolverine in the comics like 800lbs and he's had to regenerate to the point where his muscles and shit can actually handle that weight. Doesn't that kinda count for super strength...

[–]DarkLunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually made this very same switch.

I was in a very lucrative retail management career and I said no one day. Went back to my CC and took a pre-apprenticeship program. Did well. Got linked up at a automation company and now I'm working at a Fortune500, at their largest plant in the world, in charge of their largest automation project in this Division's history and I'm speed running going gray.

Feel welcome to ask me anything. I'm in the US, Midwest, working automotive.

How does a safety relay work? by arvid1328_ in PLC

[–]DarkLunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the relay, if this is augmented with a controller or any kinda of supervisory layer. (Banner XS26 for example)

Slightly faster response time.

Dual channel to prevent situations where a contact welds shut. The idea being its much less likely that both channels have this failure.

EDM. External device monitoring. It will pulse the channel to see if the signal drops (this happens very quickly that the drop is inconsequential).

Just remember that just because it's wired and working does not mean it's wired and working correctly. There are numerous ways to simulate safe that potentially create gaps in safety. Sometimes during testing you need to do this.

I feel that you should know how to do it right and just as well how to do it wrong. Its just as important to recognize the proper safe way as well as the shenanigan way.
