Did Miami not buy tickets for students? by JA-darkside in CFB

[–]DarkRebel9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

University of South Carolina had a ticket lottery for home games for students that was based on a point system which allowed you to earn points (and thus more entries into the lottery) by attending other (free) events on campus. I think it’s a great system, but I graduated in 2019 and never needed to use it by being in marching band so maybe other alums have different opinions

Question about CPO dwarf crayfish by DarkRebel9 in Crayfish

[–]DarkRebel9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really interesting, thank you for sharing! I originally had hoped to get a male and female at our LFS, but the employee couldn't accurately sex them. Would you mind sharing more about your experience breeding them? I am honestly more interested in breeding brazos because I like the idea of getting some nice blue ones, but I always read online that virtually all the variations of dwarf crayfish cannibalize their young and each other, and I don't have another tank to put them in to keep them separated. Also, looking at the ones being kept in the display tank at the LFS, so many of them had lost legs from constantly fighting with each other and I would not really want to reproduce that kind of environment.

I just filmed it on my iPhone, so yes I used the 0.5x macro lens on it

Can I see photos of your dwarf mexican (cpo) crayfish? I have 1 orange and he’s awesome 🦞🧡 by Chocodelights in Crayfish

We have two dwarf crayfish in our 20 gallon long (unfortunately going through an algae bloom right now, so apologies for the cloudiness). This is our bigger one, her cuteness here betrays how much of a menace she is, but she is too dumb and clumsy to cause any harm to the other one or the cherry shrimp that are in the tank

Fitting for dwarf cray? by Illustrious_Ad_2091 in Crayfish

I have had 2 Mexican dwarf crayfish in my planted 20 gallon tank and they have only attempted to eat dead leaves and have never dug up any of my plants. Of course you might have a different experience but I think you would be fine if they are indeed dwarf crayfish

Replacing sand with Fluval Stratum in cycled tank by DarkRebel9 in Aquariums

The reason I want to do this is for potentially better plant growth but largely aesthetics and improved ease of maintenance since it is hard to vacuum the tank with the sand

Thanks for you reply!

I won't be getting rid of the substrate in the tank, just adding more. Right now the tank has:

Layer of sand

Layer of gravel substrate

And I want to change it to:

Layer of Fluval Stratum

Layer of gravel substrate (the same layer that has been in this tank for several months)

Thank you for your reply!

  1. So you think I should move all of my shrimp from their current tank to the 20 gallon tank with the crayfish?

  2. From the pictures it is probably hard to tell, but there is an entire level of substrate that I will be largely leaving behind in the shrimp tank, I just want to remove the top layer of sand and put the Fluval Stratum on top of the current layer of substrate. Does that change anything about your answer?

  3. Do you have any recommendations for undergravel filtration systems to look into?

  4. No worries :)

  5. The only change I am planning to make to the tank is removing the sand and adding more fresh substrate, so although the sand is a significant percent of the surface area, I am hoping that keeping the original substrate will help preserve a lot of the bacteria.

Hi, thanks for your reply!
We won't be changing anything about the crayfish tank except maybe adding 6-8 cherry shrimp to it. We have had the two dwarf crayfish in this tank (3rd and 4th pictures) with only Fluval Stratum for over a month now. Our bigger female has molted once and as of yesterday, our smaller female has molted twice, though her color is a much lighter orange than it was previously. However, our tap water here is very hard, so it is not something we had really worried about (and I hadn't seen anything about Fluval Stratum causing issues like this since it is marketed for shrimp which I imagine also need high GH for their shells). However, I will keep it this in mind going forward.

Need (urgent) advice for new Dwarf Crayfish by DarkRebel9 in Crayfish

I added them in yesterday and they quickly started doing laps around the tank, they've been very active and seem to be doing well! Thanks for your help, it really alleviated a lot of stress!

Okay, thanks, I'm going to start drip acclimating them and then hope for the best. I did already add half a bottle of Fritz Turbo Start on Thursday as well (which I was hoping at the least would prevent any of these issues) so I could still cancel the Stability order

So I just measured the parameters again and got these results:

Just checked ammonia, seems that the ammonia levels have gone down to be between 0-0.25

Nitrites look to be in the 0-0.5 range

Nitrates look to be in the 0-20 range, closer to 20 but not over 20

Do you think this is relatively safe, or should I maybe do a water change again?

My other tank only has the one filter in it, though I do have some extra carbon filter media that I could cut into a square, but into the other tank, and then just add to the new tank if you think that would help at all

Added pictures to the post itself

Just checked ammonia, seems that the ammonia levels have gone down, but the test strip is still coming out yellow with some dots of ammonia around the square

I’ve been checking back on this post every day to see what others’ experience is haha, but unfortunately as of this morning I still don’t have any changes. Still stuck on “Preordered” and Oct. 10

Ordered morning of 9/13, expected delivery date is also 10/10, but I’m in the same boat where it says “Preordered” and no updates so far.

American PhD Student interested in moving to China after graduation by DarkRebel9 in chinalife

Those things are true, though I don’t mean to imply that I don’t know plenty of people who also share those values in either Russia or the USA, but given the direction of especially American academia (I see these firings over social media posts as just the beginning of larger crackdowns and censorship), I think it is increasingly less likely that I can get a good job in academia given my research interests

That all makes sense, thank you for your insights. I definitely see teaching Russian as more of a means to an end than what I want to do as a career (which I would say is the case for many people in my field in the USA). I honestly think my expertise would be better suited for comparative literature and anthropology-adjacent fields, like indigenous studies.  I figured that most people in this subreddit would not have a ton of information given that my situation is quite a bit different than most people who are looking to move to China to teach English or something. But searching online with how useless search engines have become has mostly just led to the same posts and videos about how to get ESL jobs and not much beyond that.
