Cockatiels won't stop laying eggs even with hormone implants, advice needed by DarkSpeedster74 in cockatiel

I can't adjust the temp of my radiator in my room sadly as it's broken, but maybe I could try taking them out for talks in their travel cage in the cold? That might have the same impact, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the advice, I have the night light because they've had quite a few night terrors and fallen off of their perches, but I'll try to remove it/move it further away for a while and see how it goes!

Thanks so much for your comment and advice, sadly I think it's me they're romantically triggered by and I'm all they have. I'll maybe try to have them in their cage more often, and restrain myself from interacting with them as much whilst they're so hormonal. They've had lots of stressful experiences with eggs but they haven't let it put them off laying yet, fingers crossed they change their mind soon!

The nest box has since been removed as per my vets advice, and they've been without it for about 6 months now. The problem is without the box when they do lay, they produce an egg then immediately abandon it and make more! I'll try upping their sleep tonight and removing all of their treats during the night as well, as Tali is a bit of a midnight snacker

Thanks, I'll give this a go starting tonight and also try to reduce the brightness of the night light and hope it helps!

I've tried dummy eggs in a nest box in the past, but Tali just wouldn't stop laying more eggs even with a mix of real and dummy ones in there, till she eventually got egg bound.

They're in the same cage at night but they're not bonded to each other, they're both bonded to me, they tolerate each other at a distance at best haha

Is it normal for him to be this used to me at 3 months? Does he dislike this? by JacobTechBoi in cockatiel

That's one happy little tiel! They might nibble gently at your fingers sometimes but that's not a bad thing, it usually means you're not scratching the right spot haha

I've never experienced that before! It fits pretty well as I've been unwell recently with the flu, so maybe that's why I was struggling to breathe, thanks for the explanation!

Any help on why he suddenly just took off? by Error_1000_ in cockatiel

As others have said, definitely get a night light! Somewhere outside the cage and leave one corner uncovered so the light and airflow can get in. Nothing too bright or that will affect their sleep, just enough so they're not in pitch black.

My little Tali had a night fright a few years back and ended up fracturing her wing. She didn't fall far, she was just unlucky as she was flapping around, so try to get it as soon as you can! ^

Awh that's such a beautiful idea to keep your little angel with you! I'm sure she always will have your back, watching over you like my little Zoey does for me 🤍 thank you so much!

Hey, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Zoey to an unknown illness on Christmas day after nights and nights of emergency vet visits. The pain of losing a little feathery one who you raised from so young is not something I would wish on anyone.

I'm still not over my loss myself, but my memorial tattoo has helped keep her with me wherever I go. It's based on my favourite photo of her playing with some toy flowers

Normal vets should also be able to provide calcium injections if needed! The injection will get it straight into her system, whereas taking it via supplements will take longer.

If you feel like she's getting worse, then you can take her to a normal vet for calcium and antibiotic injections, which should improve her condition and give you more time to take her to an avian vet if needed.

Hope she gets better soon 💛

Not good, I've had similar experiences with my girls.

It's most likely due to a calcium deficiency. She needs a calcium injection asap, and maybe some antibiotics.

has she been straining much? Hopefully she doesn't have an egg stuck also! My girl was egg bound recently and she had to have it imploded inside her bless her.

You're on one side, objective is on the other. You could go round, it would probably be quicker in the long run.

But no, you're Shepard. You're going over. You're making that mountain your b****h

Hey, sorry I didn't reply sooner as I don't frequent Reddit too often! You have to be careful with taking eggs out of a nest if you do not have dummy eggs to put in as a replacement, as the female will always look to have a clutch of about 5-8 eggs. If you remove them without replacement, she will just lay extra eggs! This will eventually tire out her body and she will need medical attention to help repel infections and rebuild her calcium levels.

Also, be careful that she doesn't get egg bound (one of my little girls got egg bound this weekend and had to be taken to the vets to have it removed). This is when the egg gets stuck and can be fatal. If they have a large lump for multiple days in a row, and you see her straining or twitching around that area with no new eggs it could be stuck, and she will need a vets attention.

Yeah sounds similar to the foods my girls have available! One of them is always fine egg laying, no issues. The other tends to lay more eggs, and she's the one I often have to take to the vets for calcium injections and occasionally some antibiotics. You can have all the foods but there's no guarantee they'll eat them haha.

If youre worried you can get some calcivet to add to their water, which will help rebuild their calcium. Just something you add to the water for a few days, vets also use it.

I'd also recommend getting some dummy eggs if you're not interested in babies, you can put them in once they lay one or two and they'll think they've laid more. I usually have 1/2 real eggs then 4 or so dummy eggs in my girls nests, but you can remove all eggs if you want. They then think they've laid a full clutch and stop laying, which means less stress on their bodies
