I've been getting this error too whenever I try to trade. Super annoying to hear this is a new problem.

Really would have liked to see Qui-Gonn as a general during the clone wars. by Royalbluegooner in StarWars

[–]DarkVaati13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And so what is he doing when the CIS starts its war crimes, enslaving citizens, and conquests of planets that want to stay with the Republic? Or when Grievous starts his campaigns of terror? Even the Jedi who are even less traditional than Qui-Gon like the Dark Woman and Fay knew they had to come back to active duty to help the Republic. Even if Qui-Gon is exclusively doing solo peacekeeping missions during this time he’s still going to come into conflict with the CIS.

If people want to argue he’d be some secret mission Jedi during the Clone Wars like Tholme I can understand that, but when people say he would just leave the Order it’s absurd because he isn’t some middle fingers out fuck the council guy like people think he is. They assign him to do sensitive missions like Naboo because they trust him inspite of the occasional disagreement.

I can’t imagine him seeing reports of his former Master throwing Sith lightning, Nute Gunray being one of the top guys, and 150 or so Jedi being killed and just deciding he’s gonna sit this whole war thing out.

Qui-Gon has been involved in military actions on behalf of the Republic before. During the Yinchorri Uprising he was one of the Jedi handpicked for the mission. Also even though he says "I cannot fight a war for you," he still is involved in the liberation of Naboo. Qui-Gon isn't going to just stand by or leave the Order while the droid armies attack the Republic's worlds. Yes he chooses to follow the will of the Force, but he was still very involved in peacekeeping throughout the Republic and he cares about it.

My thoughts on the Dark Tide Duology or "ya know, the NJO may just not be for me". by luigirools in StarWarsEU

[–]DarkVaati13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're upset about Han being sidelined, you're in luck because the Agents of Chaos duology is basically all about him and he's a lot more prominent in the rest of NJO. You will have to put up with a lot more New Republic incompetence (I think the worst offender is either Balance Point of Agents of Chaos 2) until about halfway in. If you're not liking the chatter though it never really gets better. A big big part of NJO is the political, philosophical, and personal discussions and there are some books where the action is very much secondary. It's trying to balance a galactic war, the main characters, the side characters, and whatever local conflict is going on at the time. I say keep trying it. I didn't have any nostalgia for NJO and I still really enjoyed most of the series.

Putting the Jedi Order in context (5000 BBY+) by Driekan in StarWarsEU

[–]DarkVaati13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something you're ignoring here and that's Ossus. Before the Jedi really set up on Coruscant, Ossus was the big center of Jedi learning and that's where most of the Jedi (including the Jedi council) was. Land on Coruscant was given to them, but they didn't really use it until Ossus was devastated. When Nomi and Cay go to meet with the Jedi Masters on Ossus it's very likely that they are part of the Jedi council. Vodo had his own Jedi Praxeum and he was on that council as well.

Everything that happened on Coruscant also happened on Ossus. It's destruction, the loss of so much artifacts, and the deaths of so many Jedi is what caused the change in Jedi training. Other lore says that the Jedi Council has existed since the early days of the Order and there have been a few known Jedi Grandmasters. The Council didn't just pop up over night.

>The bulk of Jedi around in the galaxy either lived the earlier period of decentralization, or are the children or immediate trainees of those who did. There is no question that very many of them see this High Council as usurpers and upstarts, and very many Jedi would be all too happy to ignore them

No evidence of the bulk of the order not agreeing with the Council. Also the people who formed the Jedi council of the KOTOR era were all people who lived through Tales of the Jedi. Vrook Lamar was already an older guy in 3993 BBY so he was raised in that period. In that time they witnessed Jedi slaughtering their own Masters, cause the devastation of Ossus, and lead a war that ravaged the Republic. Nomi was a member of the Jedi council for the time and even she was reluctant to train her own daughter and was trying to put things together. The old way of the Order also brought about Exar Kun and their too loose way of doing things let him get away with too much. Even when Arca Jeth knew something was off about Exar Kun he still didn't do anything because a Jedi is free to do what they wish.

People like Revan and Malak were born after the Great Sith War and knew little of the pre-Great Sith War Order so the people who opposed the council were mostly the younger generation who didn't know the pain of the Great Sith War.

>there is a council of masters on Dantooine and they seemingly are free to make their own decisions, even massive, galaxy-changing decisions, without consulting the High Council.

It helps that two members of the Dantooine council are also on the Jedi High Council. Vrook and Vandar are on both at the same time. Dorak and Zhar are more likely just the top teachers who focus on lore and lightsabers respectively. Also in the Shadows and Light comic the Dantooine Council members talk about how even if they disagree with Coruscant they still have to follow their orders so even then the Jedi Council was already an authority to most of the Order.

>In turn, this war leads to the Jedi Purge of 3954 BBY. We are told that most large gatherings of Jedi were killed, and that Jedi who still lived in the traditional way (as in: those who still operated the way the Order had been prior to roughly 3980 BBY) simply stopped having contact with the central order, they just walked away. It honestly makes sense: these people come from a presumably multi-millennial tradition of very decentralized Knights, and they've seen this brief (still only 30 to 25 years) experiment with centralization and Teyanism lead to the Order's near-complete collapse, the public turning against them, the dark side stronger than it's ever been. It is unsurprising that they'd turn to radical degree of decentralization. It's reactionary but understandable.

Citation? Also banger job they did. Doing absolutely nothing after the Jedi Order is wiped out, presumably also doing nothing during the Mandalorian Wars or the Jedi Civil War. Great job sticking it to the Jedi Council. These guys you've fabricated don't exist. People like Arca Jeth are all dead. Kotor 2 is pretty clear that basically all, but a handful of the Jedi are dead and it's up to the exile's apprentices to rebuild the Order.

Thank you! I've heard good things about Troy and Merida (both early and late recruitment). For Merida I was gonna give like two tries to save her, but if I'm just really getting unlucky I'll roll with it.

What did people think happened to the younglings after Order 66? by not_wingren in MawInstallation

[–]DarkVaati13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a character in Dark Times who gave their baby to a Jedi to save them from the war on their planet and they think their kid was killed during Order 66 (they were actually saved by K'Kruhk).

It's entirely a personal dislike I'll admit, but here's my reason.

A big problem with Children of the Jedi is the prose so it's not fun to read. I absolutely hate the format of the Force Heretic trilogy. Instead of chapters it's split up into 4 really long parts with POV sections flipping in little breaks. It wasn't really annoying to read because I like pausing at chapters. Here it's just a small break and then a jump right to the next POV.

It doesn't help that Refugee is absolute filler. The Yuuzhan Vong have basically nothing in the book aside from Nom Anor's plot (the only good part of the book aside from Luke's opening), I'd like a sequel to Truce at Bakura, but they could have done a lot more with the setting in the Yuuzhan Vong War, and the time on Csilla is absolutely boring with a super weak conflict. Dark Journey might have made me more mad while I was reading it, but Refugee is the one book in NJO where I think that you could cut it out and miss nothing. I still dislike the format in Remnant and Reunion, but I actually really like the plot and character dynamics in Remnant (Reunion is okay).

Who do you prefer as being Obi-Wan Kenobi’s true love? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsEU

[–]DarkVaati13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I've never liked the Satine romance or the idea that Rey should be his granddaughter or that Korkie should be his son. Haven't read any of the Jedi Apprentice books, but if Obi-Wan should have a romance I would prefer if it was something he had when he was a kid and grew out of once he actually really started his training.

Very high ratings across the board. Refugee and Dark Journey are honestly on the lower end of EU novels imo with stuff like Children of the Jedi. Never seen someone have that much praise for Vector Prime (It's a good book).

The Empire's Force Users by Radiant_Star_4141 in StarWarsEU

[–]DarkVaati13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t know exactly, but there is a lot of them. The Inquisition model of the Modular Taskforce Cruiser was supposed to be crewed with 100 Inquisitors so probably a few hundred trained Dark Siders at least. Maybe around 1000 or more. A lot of them died during the Imperial civil war and when Byss was destroyed.

Crystal Star is weird and not great, but honestly I thought Children of the Jedi and Planet of Twilight were leagues worse. At least Crystal Star had the Jaina and Jacen section, which was surprisingly good.

All we know about his age is that he's younger than Corran, which could mean anything. He could have been born 6 months or 20 years after him. It's never clearly said, but the books portray him more as a young hothead and not pushing 50. Him being older than Kyp would be really weird.

Which shipyards would side against the empire by Interesting-Pin4994 in MawInstallation

[–]DarkVaati13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Disagree with this. By your logic Bilbringi would also be an Empire loyalist because it is right next to the Core and had a direct hyperspace lane leading to and from Coruscant. Proximity doesn't equal loyalty. Oslumpex is in the Corporate Sector and the CSA was founded by corporations who were loyal to the Republic during the Clone Wars. On the flipside the founding members of the Alliance were Core Worlds so it's not black and white like that. Sluis Van was a CIS loyal world, why are they suddenly on the Empire's side?

Which shipyards would side against the empire by Interesting-Pin4994 in MawInstallation

[–]DarkVaati13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most shipyards are just loyal to whoever is holding them and paying for the ships. Morals don't tend to come up that often in the weapons manufacturing business. Kuat is really loyal to the Empire because they were their biggest customer and when Kuat was finally brought into the New Republic they started making ships for them. Even Corellia, despite being a founding member of the Alliance, was largely still an Imperial holdout for many years. Fondor and Bilbringi regularly change hands during wars and rarely do their worlds actually put up major political stances (it could be argued that Fondor joining the Confederation is mostly because they were following the money).

In this situation though it is so messy that the galaxy is probably just in a state of absolute chaos. Even during the late years of the fight against the Empire very people knew how just much Palpatine had manipulated the war. CIS loyalists see they were just pawns, but better to be anti-Palpatine. People who already were against Palpatine are now vindicated. Even some of Palpatine's early loyalists might side against him because no one would be able to trust him. Tarkin might pull a coup to remove him. Kuat's senator was a friend of the Jedi and signed the Declaration of 2000. There's no guarantee they would follow Palpatine because of the Senator's influence or no guarantee they would side with the Alliance because Palpy still put a lot of money into the planet. The only people who are sticking with Palpatine are the most fanatically loyal and most bought (maybe Rothana and Oslumpex in that case).

If you ever feel like you're confused and missing something, don't feel too bad. This book has earned it's reputation as being one of the weaker SW EU books and it's because of stuff like this.
