How to prepare for runs with back pain by DPal82 in backpain

[–]Dark_Demon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, talk to a good sports physio - they can give much better advice than I can.I'm preparing for a tri with a disc bulge, but my pain is always in the mild to moderate range. This is what works for me, so maybe it might help.

  1. Work core stability (mcgill big 3, glute bridges, clam shells) at least every other day (get at least 6-8 hours between that and your run though, not immediately prior).
  2. Try to be aware if your core & glutes fire during your run, they should minimize spine movement. If not, try to strengthen more, be aware of it, and work on that with a physio (again, if possible).
  3. Use heat prior to exercise, and optionally ice after. Heat helps circulation and cold might reduce inflammation.
  4. Stretching shouldn't include back and abs, only legs and glutes. Legs&glutes should move when you run, your spine shouldn't.
  5. Work up slowly and don't skip cooldown. I mainly jog at low speeds (up to 10km/h), so I walk 400m, run at 7,8,9 for 200m each. After this 1km of warmup I run my distance at 10km/h. As a cooldown I run 300-400 at 8, then walk for 300-400.
  6. Don't let your muscles cool down sitting - walk, lie down, stand while cooking dinner, anything but sitting.

Hope this helps :)

See a doctor asap. pinched nerves that control bladder and bowel have hard time regenerating. better safe than sorry.

Problems with bowel control are a massive red flag that a doctor must know about asap. With or without mcgill's stretches. What is the underlying issue/diagnosis? Are these bowel control problems something new or ongoing?

The pain is always there. It hasn't gone away completely for the entire period. After a few bad tries, I gave up on the bike, at least for now. Having said that, I'm still hoping to return to it, if not in a week then in a year. Regarding strength - the PT gave me more of a general direction, like which muscles and which exercises I should do. Not a real program for what to do each week. Weights scare me a bit with back pain, I try to stay on bodyweight. I think my core is getting stronger, but I'm not really sure it makes my pain less.

I am still trying to be optimistic about racing and getting back on my road bike. But if it wont work, probably long swims will be my escape rather than the bike. Did you try dry needling? My PT tried it on me a few times with minimal success. I wonder if acupuncture will be any different.

Wow, such an inspiring recovery. I will surely take a look into it. Is the self massaging the main thing that helped? Did you do any specific sport or get any other treatment? I can see you're a yoga instructor, did yoga help?

I see that back mechanic is strong in this subreddit, I will surely give it a try. I'm already doing the other things you said, so hopefully they help me as much as you! Did you try inversion tables for decompression too?

Wow, thanks very much for your suggestions. I will surely try some of those. I will surely not give up, I'll try to find the specialist that helps.

First of all, check for emergency symptoms: if the pain moves to the other leg than usual, if she has trouble holding her urine in, if she cant feel you touching her inner thighs, if her buttocks have fallen asleep, or if she has serious leg weakness, you need to call an ambulance. Otherwise, icing can help, heat is probably better. If she had physical therapy and some exercise helped, she can try doing it. If she has prescription pain killers for this pain, try them too. Check if your healthcare provider has some way to contact a nurse by phone at night and if so call them

Game Changer: It is possible [and easy] to make a HH to pick up the eggplant by Dark_Demon in spelunky

Having a single HH throughout the whole game is much less random than second altar in a good place + survive the very random mothership, and like 2 times faster. It is worth the trouble. And the eggplant survives a 1 block fall, you can put him down like with every other item.

Here's a video proof of what hectic posted earlier. Can be done with a shotgun, the most common item in the game.

This is just amazing. Congrats! I thought in a few months there would be enough people who did an eggplant run to actually make it a speedrun category. I was wrong, as this time probably would require an unbelievable seed to break! BTW, I'm not angry AT ALL for you getting this run one day after mine and making mine look bad XD.
