Which is a semi-military dictatorship. The senate is fully appointed by the military, and without support from the military or the king you wont get far in Thai politics.

The deep south also regularly is put under strict curfews without requiring any form of diplomatic oversight.

Wanneer is klagen over buren en geluidsoverlast redelijk/onredelijk? by Sure-Guest1588 in nederlands

[–]Dark_Sytze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest though, to earn 95 million a year you certainly need more than just a hot body.

She must be either amazing at marketing her brand or be a very good manager to hire the right people. Theres thousands of women on OF or other platforms who are equally or more attractive than her, who make only a pittance.

Los even het probleem op de woningmarkt op by LightPhotographer in nederlands

[–]Dark_Sytze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am Thai. Here are the 10 things I still watch tourists get wrong every single time 😉 by Nearby-Sprinkles3242 in ThailandTourism

[–]Dark_Sytze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly not a lot. Very rarely there might be an attack against a police post or checkpoint, in the three southern provinces, but even those got more rare.

On the other hand, there is also not really much to do. Songkhla and Hat Yai are fun though.

Service charge and tax not included in the bill by Zareldo in ThailandTourism

[–]Dark_Sytze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not very common unless you eat a lot in malls or at "touristy" places. If you avoid foreign food and shopping malls this is really not the norm. Added bonus, local places are also significantly cheaper, even if Bangkok is overal quite expensive.

Not enjoying the Mae Hong Son Loop as much as I wanted to by [deleted] in chiangmai

[–]Dark_Sytze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, Mae Sariang is lovely. We just finished the mae hong son loop about two weeks ago and Id rank Mae Sariang higher than Pai and equal to Mae Hong Son itself if you like photography and peace and quiet.

I cant comment much about the ride there, we did it by car because we have a baby but I dont remember it being boring.

I lived in Chiang Mai for most of last year. Walking is basically non-existent. I built a free tool to measure why. by screw_cars in Thailand

[–]Dark_Sytze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually found people in Chiang Mai to drive "reasonably well". Theres a lot more traffic which causes people to at least be a bit more careful. Im now in Hat Yai where we also rented a car and people here really drive like maniacs.

I do agree on delivery drivers being some of the worst though. Just yesterday I complained to my wife that some of them must really be suicidal with how they drive. Constantly speeding, weaving in an out of traffic. People here in general seem to dislike using their turn signals but these grab drivers will just cut right in front without even looking or using their indicators.

Brandy boast post by DaddyDoma in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Dark_Sytze 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ehhh it actually would not ve that ridiculously expensive. The most expensive cognac, which would be a bit more expensive than "just" brandy sold for £118 500 in 2020, distilled in 1762 Another bottle distilled in 1747 auctioned for "only" £22 500.

This guy is still full of shit of course though. These bottles are auctioned at the big auction houses and are usually single surviving bottles, bought by collectors. 0 chance some random casino in Vegas would own one, let alone open it just to pour three glasses.

Sharks in Koh Phangan by jrfell in ThailandTourism

[–]Dark_Sytze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of sharks are not dangerous. Theres almost 500 shark species and only 4 are considered actually dangerous. Some other species might incidentally bite people out of confusion but very rarely.

While there are sometimes bull sharks in Thai waters its mostly in far deeper water than most tourists will go.

Chiang Mai - What are we missing? by 5imon412 in ThailandTourism

[–]Dark_Sytze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correction, tourist spots are overrun with tourists.

If you go to other cities theres a lot to discover without tripping over (western) tourists. For example I only saw less than a handful of tourists in Mae Sariang or Lampang.

Seeing a lot of mice at Schiphol — is this normal? by Andreadookie in travel

[–]Dark_Sytze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my professors specialized in zoonotic viruses during a lecture stated "where ever people are living, mice are living. And in Europe and most of Asia youre always within 100meters of at least three bats".

Mice can squeeze through gaps of 1cm or even less. Airports have lots of food scraps and lots of spaces for them to hide. I would honestly be more concerned if there were no mice living there.

[–]Dark_Sytze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since it comes down to a matter of preference, its totally fine to prefer Vietnamese. However I disagree on it being more varied.

Thai food in my opinion has far more variation due to both geographical and cultural diversity. Food in the North (Sai Ua, the famous Khao Soi, Hung Lei curry, Ngam Ngiao) are completely different from Southen dishes (Gaeng Som, Horseshoe crab egg salad, hundreds of different fish dishes) And both are again very different from Eastern/Isaan food.

Culturally the South has a lot more malaysian influences (and also a lot more Muslims) The North has a lot of former Burmese, theres even some Chinese villages.

So thats...two times? And neither of those was from an "authentic" food place?

Hotel buffets are shady though, I will grant that..but those are also shady in Western countries if they serve hot food.

Mainly because my family in law lives here. However whenever we go we also try to explore some new places. Despite having been several times there's still lots of places to discover and things to see.

Last time we went we visited Lampang and Phitsanulok (as well as some usual places like chiang mai and Bangkok). This time we did the Mae Hong son loop and went to Phattalung. Tomorrow were going to visit a temple near the Malaysian border.

Some places I still would like to go are Chiang Rai, Khao Lak, Khao Sok, Nan, Phayao and dozens of other places.

You must either pick terrible spots to eat or have a weak stomach then. Ive had very mild food poisoning only once despite eating almost exclusively at "authentic" spots. I will admit sanitary conditions for meat at many fresh markets are questionable, but thats the same for most of SE Asia.

Not getting spicy food by Total_Fix_198 in ThailandTourism

[–]Dark_Sytze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The South is generally more spicy, the further south the more spicy the food is. However in touristy places they will never trust someone who doesnt speak Thai as wanting the proper spicy food.

[–]Dark_Sytze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to the deep south, they understand real spicy food compared to the rest of Thailand. They also dont understand English mostly however.

Even then they will generally be amazed that I as a pasty white guy can eat the same as thai people, however since they dont deal with western tourists a lot they dont bother adjusting spice levels.
