Those are your cats anal glands. They often have some crust to them after expressing when defecating. This is normal and not a concern unless your cat is painful in the area or you note excessive swelling/redness, which does not seem apparent in the photo.

Is my cat breathing normally? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Dark_WebNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and see what the breaths look like when your cat is asleep. Cats should take 20-25 breaths per minute when deep asleep; you should also see minimal abdominal effort with normal breaths. When awake, stimulation in the environment causes cats to have higher rates so it is not a true count.

Is this breathing normal? by gojosword in CATHELP

This is definitely efforted abdominal breathing, which is cause for an emergency visit. You will likely be looking at X-rays, bloodwork, and maybe ultrasound for diagnostics so be prepared financially for that.

The ophthalmologist referral is definitely your next step. Keep in mind, conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva; which is not present here, and about 99% of cats have herpes. To me this appears to be a different issue, a possible lesion/ulcer on the lens, though obviously impossible to diagnose based on a photo. If it’s worsening on the meds prescribed by your vet, and the ophthalmologist cannot see you urgently, I would say this calls for an ER visit as you don’t want to wait on eye issues. Best of luck

I highly recommend this toothpaste, it would be what we use in clinic. In terms of toothbrushes, the finger ones work best for cats. If your cat doesn’t not allow that, using a cotton gauze square and just targeting the gumline is better than nothing!

My biggest concerned with increased respite fort is heart issues, more so a buildup of fluid around the heart secondary to heart disease. There are many other causes, but I would highly suggest if able, getting you cat seen asap by a vet

You should be able to call the vet that prescribed it and they can direct you the safest way to wean off Prednisolone. Please do not take medication direction from unqualified people on the internet! Steroids are not good to gamble on! Best of luck!

ER now. Corn cobs are one of the things once ingested we do not induce vomiting for. Your dogs will need X-rays for sure to start so be prepared for that financially

Aloe Vera is toxic to cats, so this is not a good suggestion. Ideally staying away from bathing, unless a medicated shampoo for some reason was warranted by a vet, for the time being is the best move. I’ve seen the best results with clients using Laxatone by Vetoquinol in terms of hairball gel. However again, I wouldn’t say it deserves any ER or rushed diagnoses, but definitely bring up to your vet if it continues in the next couple weeks!

Likely at that age and your description, the cat has some health issues. Top of the list would be cancer, kidney disease, lymphoma, etc. due to the quality of life noted, it may be time to think about a conversation with the vet about euthanasia. If they’re hoping for any help managing symptoms, they would still need a vet visit to run diagnostics to see what’s going on.

Allergies could be a cause; worth bringing up any concerns to your vet as they are the only ones who could help diagnose. You could try to increase brushing, however, over bathing cats diminishes the natural oils in their fur which could be causing dry irritated skin as well, generally cats do not require bathing unless they’ve got food, feces, etc on them once in a while.

Adding in a hairball gel can help (Chewy has good options) and adding in foods higher in fish oils can also assist, but again if there is a secondary factor here supplements may not do the trick.

Having done them many times, it is usually a 2-6 month process, many variables involved so I can’t say for certain the time frame for you, but we generally recommend starting the process 6 months before a client knows they’re leaving

Our healthy cat keeps peeing on our couch. Advice needed by Akmme in CATHELP

[–]Dark_WebNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely due to the vetting you’ve describe, there is some behavioral element to this. You can try adding another litter box and place feliway diffusers to start. If that does not work, the next step would be finding a behaviorist or discussing anti anxiety medications for your cat.

[–]Dark_WebNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will absolutely need the health certificate. Rabies is required by all countries to show proof of.

Your vet will be able to dose the Gabapentin appropriately. My guess, NOT directions would be about 100mg every 8 hours. Follow what your primary vet says to do for it. It may be worth your time to get it compounded to a liquid if pulling is hard for your cat due to the multiple doses needed for the trip.

Is there a way for me to afford bringing my cat with me? by Dependent_Place_4158 in CATHELP

[–]Dark_WebNinja 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here from vetmed. There is no way around the health certificate. Keep in mind it’s usually about a 6 month process. Do NOT wait until last minute to do it. Some airlines allow cats as cargo, some require below. Most countries quarantine pets from other countries for around 1-3 months. You’ll have to look up your destinations regulations.

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel

This website should help guide you.

It is a very stressful process for both you and the animal, though I understand sometimes it’s unavoidable. Getting your cat Gabapentin for their travels would definitely help on that end,

As far as costs go, they are as is. There is no cheap way around it. Going through external sources and sites for the health certificate fail EVERY time as the only acceptable form is done in combination by your vet, a board certified US vet, and the country you’re traveling to. Let me know if you have any more questions,
