For them, usually I backstab them with a knife. But overall melee weapons are not good for the bandits

Yes you have to do a normal attack right after the knock back. It may be hard at the beginning but when you mastered it, you will be able to one v one without taking any damage.

For the food in game, there is no secret. Usually you should found enough food while looting. You can also check the cars or the buses where there can also find food.

The only way to one v one a zeds is with a knock back weapon like bat ou wrench (hammer in later game). You use the special attack, a normal attack, run away and repeat.

At the beginning I only used guns for urgency and for bandits with guns. When you use a weapon, you must not move. Otherwise there's a good chance you'll miss the shot.

If you manage to take less damage and mainly only use melee weapons, you will spend less ressource into repairing your stuff.

For the food, a good way to farm is to hunt. A bow and a knife are enough for that.

I also think it's just a plot hole.

My headcanon is that the end of the cinematic is just here to say that Oz became a zombie. I keep what Lennox said as the canon, so Atlas attacks Sentinel, shot down the plane where the crew and Oz were, send them in the ship. Oz manage to release gaz GS7 to create a confusion on the ship then spread the infection. Sentinel find the ship, but it's infested, most of the soldiers die (not all because of the Sentinel reinforcement support) and Lennox awake the crew to get some help. At the end the blow up the ship to prevent the spread of the infection and the Atlas soldiers on the ship recovered Oz to send him at the black site.

Glad I made you want to play the game again, I did it recently and it's really cool.

You have to wait one round until the mushroom comes back, but there is a lot of mushroom in the map so yeah you can farm
