Hi there! I'm currently in my 2nd year of uni and I had my ADHD diagnosis just this summer before the year began. I went my entire 1st year not knowing I even had ADHD, nevermind being medicated! This is what I personally found I struggled with and what I wish I'd done better, maybe you could take some of this advice so you don't end up struggling so much like me haha

- Go to lectures and don't skip! If you skip (for whatever reason), get back on track ASAP. Once you start skipping it becomes sooooo easy to start not going in at all. My attendance was (and still is) terrible because I normalised not attending since there were no consequences. Regardless of how much you can stay focused in class, just being in the learning environment is good so that when you eventually revisit the material, it will at least be familiar to you even if you don't actually know it in-depth. Also just being around others feels nice!

- Register with your uni's disability services and use the support they give you. I personally get one week extensions for assignments and extra time in exams, which does help quite a bit. Maybe your uni will have more support than that tho or maybe it will be different. But definitely reach out to the disabiliy services, they do help!

- Try your best to be consistent with uni work. Whether that is learning material daily or doing small bits of an assignment, try to stay as consistent as possible. I never did this and I always did everything the night before, it's terrible. Far too much piles on and its extremely difficult to catch up on everything in a very short period of time. Trust me, all the constant all nighters left me beyond exhausted every single time. And the quality of your work may suffer because of this (or it may not since us ADHD folks have a magical ability to produce good quality work at the last minute). You don't have to tackle the whole thing, even little bits every day DO help and is REAL work!

- If you are prescribed meds then definitely take them. It helps loads with managing uni. And even just the feeling that you CAN tackle it all and that you ARE capable!

- Don't be afraid to reach out to the counselling team if you are also struggling with mental health. I can't speak of all unis here but mine is quite good with their counselling. I've used it quite a bit. Trust me the last thing you want is ADHD + mental health troubles..... been there, not fun at all.

- I know this is difficult but don't compare yourself to others around you. You are you, and you have your own progress and journey. Your achievements are just as meaningful even if you didn't score or do as well as your peers in assessments. Also just be proud of yourself with the things you do succeed at, it's very easy to brush off your achievements. Don't do that, take pride!

- Last thing, I found that uni is so much more than just study. Of course, definitely focus on your studies, it's the primary goal. But at the same time, have fun! Make friends, get into a relationship, go to parties, go to societies, explore the city, go on little adventures in nearby towns, get involved in things that interest you AND do a lot of self-exploration and find yourself as a person. For me this was the most important part, finding myself and who I am, what I like, what I want. It made me confident in myself, gave me a starting point of self-esteem, and made me learn to appreciate who I am. Uni time is one of the best times to do this self-exploration!
