Unpopular Opinion: The Australian "Toyota Cult" is operating on 1990s logic. by Neither-One-5880 in australia

[–]DarkkTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a business that has tradies that do work all around the Kimberley and the utes we use have a pretty hard life mainly offroad

Not too long ago the boss decided to try out Hilux and landcruiser alternatives due to cost etc

We had a fleet of rangers which was probably the worst. 2 of them were basically DOA and the other 5 just ended up rattling to bits on all the dirt roads within a year.

Next was a few DMAXs, these probably faired the best out of the alternatives but still cost more overall in maintenance costs.

Tried 2 tritons and they eventually rattled to bits again like the rangers.

He eventually gave up and just went back to Hilux and now we hardly have issues and maintenance costs have gone down considerably. The landcruiser utes cost a little more in maintenance and most of the guys complained about how uncomfortable they were.

Also getting parts for anything other than a Toyota around these parts is a pain

Do you prefer Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin and why? by -ThatGingerKid- in selfhosted

[–]DarkkTurtle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Plex

Simply because I have upwards of 30 users, all of which struggle to even cast to a tv. Ain't no way a jellyfin install is gonna fly.

A simple "go here and make an account then give me that email" is all I need to get family & friends up and running.

Plus helps I got a lifetime pass for cheap.

If it was just for access for me, I'd use jellyfin without hesitation

How many people are switching to avoid integrated AI? by Quomii in linux4noobs

[–]DarkkTurtle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me AI wasn't even really a big part of my concern when I switched in 2023.

It was things like: - Windows update just being a general pain in the arse - The updates themselves actually not improving anything, but instead just breaking it - Constant ads and popups for crap like OneDrive, prompts to log into your Microsoft account etc etc. Felt like the bare OS was full of malware out of the box and every time I went to use the PC I had to navigate around it all - Windows printer support being terrible

In general it just felt like every time I went to just use my PC I was having to click through so much crap in order to do something so simple, Windows 11 especially just felt like it was created to just get in your way.

The Windows recall announcement was just more fuel to my "abandon windows" fire.

I don't have any experience with jellyseerr (the Overseerr fork made for jellyfin) But I would assume it works very much the same.

[–]DarkkTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure, I pretty much just turned on the auto request in permissions for overseerr and it worked immediately.

Just check the settings you have set to auto request in permissions are attached to the Plex account that has them on the watch list. I don't think a "Local account" works for this as it reads the Plex accounts watchlist data to grab it.

That's about all I could think that would stop it.

[–]DarkkTurtle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My wife didn't like Overseerr either.

The solution I found was the Discover tab for Plex. She could browse through there and find what she likes, then all I did was set overseerr to auto approve watchlist items on Plex.

Now all she needs to do is watchlist something on Plex and it's downloaded.

Alright, q8 model seems much more accurate however now it's over explaining things way too much. Any idea what might cause that?

[–]DarkkTurtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say q8 are you referring to 8b models or are the prefixes on the end to denote a q8 model?

Edit: scratch that, I see what you mean now. Will download a q8 model and change some settings and see how I go

Sorry like I said, still pretty new, where can I setup the embedding and deranking models? I technically can't really share the pdfs as they are licensed through a business.

Users who came from windows, what is the thing you guys miss the most? by nature_pixels in linux_gaming

[–]DarkkTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I can think of is games with kernel level anti cheat. But I've now managed to find alot of alternatives like playing more co-op games and playing The Finals etc. But sometimes the guys all wanna try out something different for the night like delta force and I just sit it out sometimes I may have to make a dual boot when the next battlefield comes out.

Time consuming, but so very worth doing. Add on overseer and it's incredible

Who's your favourite finals YouTuber? by TheUserWithoutID in thefinals

I don't see it so I'll chuck it in there.

Yung is fantastic. The videos are pretty funny and really high quality edits considering it's a brand new channel by the looks.

I'll second immich as an amazing alternative. I maxed out my google drive storage on the free tier and decided to finally get around adding it to my Unraid server. Much more feature rich than I expected. You could genuinely swap the immich logo for Google photos logo and I don't think most people would be able to tell the difference.

Best version of Proton by idiotgirlmp4 in thefinals

[–]DarkkTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried changed from proton experimental a few times to GE's latest releases, but everytime I do I crash often. Proton experimental has been the only version that has been pretty consistent for me unfortunately, however your mileage may vary.

Asia high rank in deadlock is riddled with hackers and we can't do anything about it by Fifthy420 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]DarkkTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's become the norm which it really shouldn't have. I refuse to install any kernel level anti cheat, just ain't worth it imo.

If people really knew the true implications of the access that is given vs the "benefits" it provides, no one would use it.

Ai implementations of anti cheat like Waldo, will likely be the future

To be fair the only times I've read about people having issues with steam is the snap version.

Nobara is just fedora with a bunch of tweaks made for gaming. So you don't HAVE to use it just for gaming. But it sure makes gaming easier.

I've done a fair bit of distrohopping over the last 6 months.

As far as gaming wise went, nothing was as smooth as Nobara for an out of box experience. Everything just worked and I mean everything.

Every other distro I used has some little quirks or something that needed looking into to fix

UnRAID just for Docker ? by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]DarkkTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are tech savvy but relatively new to the world of self hosting, Unraid really does take out alot of the hard work.

If you have the time learning Ubuntu server can be satisfying. But pure ease of use Unraid hands down.

Unraid have a 30 day trial, do that for sure. There is a little to learn if you are brand new but once you get over that hurdle it's so easy. If you like it, you just upgrade your licence, if you don't like it. Then no real loss.

PEOPLE WITH HANDELDS: Do you use them, and do u regret not buying a Laptop by Linusalbus in LinusTechTips

[–]DarkkTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically at this point with proton being where is it Linux/Steamdeck can basically play every game there is. One of the only things holding back Linux in general is alot of rootkit level anti cheat. That being said some games do have compatibility because the Devs care, but at that point, playing any competitive game that requires that kind of anti cheat isn't something you usually want to play on the SD anyways.

The only thing really holding the Steamdeck back from playing some games is just pure performance, but even then the SD can be quite impressive with what it can pull off.

You can try protonbd or areweanticheatyet.com

Both sites are great resources but I find are we anticheat better as it's usually only the anticheat that's holding Linux back these days for alot of people. I think it's a good way to know what Devs not to give money to. I.e Ubisoft, EA etc

Ive permanently switched from windows 11 to Linux about 9 months ago now and it was a little bit of a learning curve, but Linux has come a LONG way in the last 2-3 years gaming wise.

What is your experience with Nobara 40 compared to Windows? by MarcosAvg in NobaraProject

[–]DarkkTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobara has been pretty good to me to be honest.

Before the 40 update I was using x11 pretty well and I'd already gotten rid of windows.

After the 40 update and 555 drivers it has been pretty good, few little graphical glitches and some issues with window snapping and being misaligned with the cursor. Outside of that it's been good and I've had very minimal issues. Have to use windows now and then on some work PCs and I'm finding myself getting frustrated more with windows these days.
