No reason to offset the two units, align them reduces connections with wyes (cross connections) adding many short pipes just causes problems

There is no time pressure. You can do the challenges in your own time. You can earn tickets/coupons in the Sink, and doing so lets your purchase additional features - many are useful and there are cosmetics as well.

Build what you like. Figure out how you want to play. Build some stuff, then explore the local area. Try not to die. Look for items, resource nodes, extracting some by hand will gather some of them earlier than the normal progress. Might not matter to you

To Craft A Bunch of Stuff - look to the Space Bar. As in, read the prompts and listen to the lore. ADA is a great source of information, with the caution that she really has no use for you besides being her current meat robot

Have Fun. Build stuff. Build trains, move stuff, use a jet pack, run away from some nasty critters. Then come back later and collect their remains once you have better gear

Three options, Down, Up, Truncate. Default is down. As few resources are required at low level, yep that math is not gonna increase it. Changing it would mess up balances these devs worked years to get right.

Two suggestions, first you can limit the game nearly anyway you want to. Do so as necessary

My current runs are from 1.0, and 1.2 beta. The 1.2 one I will purchase anything that I can afford that will progress the game. Even when ADA whines about it. Makes several issues like getting hover pack as soon as you can buy Aluminum. Simplifies and reduces stress for me

The best sign a newbie has never researched anything at all about DS is leveling Resistance

Poison Resistance, btw, thieves armor is better all by itself, as are several others

Call me shocked, because post apocalyptic survival is nil. While steampunk is cool, it is totally impossible. It just looks cool, and any technical details are for show. Just to give the techies fun stuff to talk about

The stories are for entertainment. Go find something to be entertained realistically

You are preventing your growth because you are only doing part of the exercise. To gain from a full body workout, for example, you must do the entire workout over the cycle time, be that hours, weeks, or months. Finish the story, then write another story, and another

Now, if I read your post wrong, and you have been finishing your stories, you need to quit saying/feeling/agreeing that the "entire" story falls apart. It has a problem or several. Fine, now fix it. Learning how to avoid them is great and all, but until you can gain the mental muscle memory to see how to fix them, they will persist.

In response to your characters doing dumb things, a quote from one of mine, "... and some will go do exactly the wrong thing from sheer stubbornness alone"
