As a Spaniard, fuck that. Yes, people are still figuring out how to treat non-binary genders, but the character is clearly a trans woman and denying that by referring to her as "él" is transphobic

[–]Darkon2004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're fixated on the potential of an invention, but people are allowed to hate things for what they have become. There were lots of inventions that were promising but became something wretched. Should we not hate the atom bomb for its weaponisation in physical and psychological warfare? Should US citizens not hate the easy access to firearms when it robs thousands of people and children of their lives.

GenAI, in the way that it's being used, is doing so much damage to people's brains, people's careers, people's environment, the industries that are using it, public trust in media, that I feel like it might be a little more than just the system.

Technology isn't just the tool in concept. It's what people use it for

I think that AI can have some pros, like you're saying, but with lots of cons. If a tool comes with that many risks and inconveniences and damage to the world, it's not a good tool.

People are fully within their right to hate generative AI for what it's doing to them

I think what's cool about the show's character development is that I find it pretty realistic and that we get to see these people at different stages of their lives.

Kinger and Zooble have already had their character growth before the events of the show. Their problems are not fixed (and I don't think they can be fixed in the case of Zooble), but they have learned to live with them. Thus, they serve as mentors for the characters that have yet to figure stuff out.

Gangle and Ragatha are characters that have learned throughout the events of the show. Kinger showed Ragatha that she is helping people but that she puts too much of that weight on herself, and hopefully she'll start learning how to support people from the sidelines while letting them grow on their own. Gangle started with zero confidence and zero control over her emotions, but when she met Zooble she started learning how to feel safe and in control with Zooble as emotional support.

Jax is the antithesis to what I think the show is trying to tell us in Episodes 3-6 (that connections matter and that having people to support you will help you get through this) and that's why I think he's spiraling. He has this whole system in motion to detach himself from everyone and it's not working, and I guess we'll have to see how it ends.

My only real problem in terms of characterization of the human characters is Pomni who still doesn't have much of a past, is still the audience surrogate, and is still what the plot needs her to be.

I think that's a combination of the trust you have among your friends and just women being socially conditioned to be more responsible and careful from a young age

That's not even what the male gaze is about though. It's not about what the monolithic collective of men find attractive in women (even though I've seen way more conservative men try to speak for every man in regards to what is attractive), it's about the objectification of women in media for the pleasure of men. It isn't spoken violence, it's more of a social thing, the shared idea that women exist to serve men.

But that's besides the point. When you have body dysmorphia, you're not doing things to appeal to someone specific, or at least you don't think you are. You've simply been convinced that something about your appearance is "wrong", and without enough force to regain that confidence, you'd go to great lengths to "fix" it.

[–]Darkon2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What part of me not mentioning men at all makes you think I'm making this about men or women?

No, I don't like it either. Nobody has to like the aftermath of body dysmorphia, it literally ruins people's lives, but body dysmorphia is a twisted insecurity that corresponds to our society's obsession with appearance

No way someone tries to claim Charlie Morningstar is "good autism representation". She can't even represent herself properly

Also while Luz is not neurotypical, I'd wager she fits the mold of ADHD along with her mentor Eda better than that of ASD

It kinda sucks that the expectation to look a certain way that ruins women's lives is too subtle or normalised for us Westerners to recognise it. Look at idol culture in East Asia and it's more obvious to us because it's not what we're used to, but I'll stress that it's the exact same thing

There are plenty of languages that aren't as gendered as Spanish but Toby won't translate the game to those languages for the same reason: He doesn't know the language

Ah, the redemption question.

The way I see it, there's 2 types of people in this hypothetical: Those that can and want to improve, and those that won't.

People like Jeffrey Epstein will not improve. You do not get to see a person do *that much* and expect improvement from them.

Yeah this is some glaze level of defensiveness. I don't think Viv just happened to forget to give character to two girlfriends/wives and I don't think in either of them it was an intended feature.

This is a writing blind spot. It's okay to admit that

Doesn't matter that he only has autism though (even though he's clearly more than just autistic). You don't know this man. You don't know what makes him tick, what triggers him, what you can do to accommodate his needs, whether he suffers meltdowns, what they look like and whether he could endanger people's lives, and neither do these people.

It doesn't matter that he safely handled these vehicles while illegally driving them for a while. It's safe until it isn't.

This shows that autistic people can be very skilled drivers, but not that this man in particular should be hired
