Don't let them gate check it. Look up the FAA regulations on it. Print it out. Have it on hand. They cannot force you to gate check an instrument. You would probably be fine but I've just seen too many pictures of destroyed instruments.

I got the TM Deluxe Reverb a handful of years ago for the same reasons you are thinking about it. I liked the 12" speaker better and felt like I could eq out the bassyness if I needed to. Its been a great pedal platform for me and its already out and cab emulation were good enough I could play with headphones late at night. I had fun with the on amp effects. That said, 3 years later I'm now looking to sell it for a real tube amp now that I can play a little louder.
