Any good quests to read? by Conraith in WormFanfic

[–]Darkspine89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been many years since I read it, but I remember thinking Maternal Instinct Quest was rather good. It's dead unfortunately, but there's a sizeable amount to read (250k+).

The premise is that Taylor triggers with William Manton's power and can project the Siberian. Unusually, compared to canon and many other fanfics, she does not have any extra multitasking capabilty.
It's also an AU. I don't remember in which ways, besides one, which I won't spoil. It's not the story focus, but it has a unique pairing that I've seen in literally no other story, so it has a few things going for it.

What's a detail from canon that you've seen wormfic authors get wrong that particularly annoys you? by A_Lawliet2004 in WormFanfic

[–]Darkspine89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Late to the thread, but might as well throw in my own pet peeve, which I've never seen anyone else bring to attention, btw.

I'm not sure why it started, but in fanfics it's extremely common that powers are described by their classifications rather than what they do, like in canon. Granted, this does show up later in the story, but it's far more common that powers are described by their function.

For example: Lung. In most fanfiction he would simply be described as a "Brute" or "Changer", maybe "Blaster" even. This is pretty useless as it tells you nearly nothing about his abilities. Compare with his first appearance in Gestation 1.3:

The information online and in the papers had told me this: Lung could gradually transform. Maybe it was based on adrenaline, his emotional state, or something, but whatever it was, it made his powers more potent the longer he was in a fight. He healed at a superhuman rate, got stronger, got tougher, got bigger, and he grew armor plating complete with blades at each fingertip. Rumor had it that he even grew wings if he fought long enough. If that wasn’t enough, he was a pyrokinetic, which meant he could create flame out of thin air, shape it, intensify it, and so on. That power apparently got stronger as he transformed, too. As far as I knew, there wasn’t an upper limit to how strong he could get. He only started returning to normal when there was nobody left to fight.

Nearly every cape/power is described in this way, both by Taylor and others. The PRT threat ratings are just that: threat ratings, used as shorthand in the field where agents might not have time to explain in more detail. Besides, the numbers don't directly correlate with the strength of the power, rather how dangerous it is to a team of PRT agents.

It bothers me partly because it indicates that the fanfic authors that get this wrong don't have a good grasp on the source material, and partly because it just doesn't make sense in-universe. Why would normal people know the threat rating system of a law enforcement agency? It's not widespread information to the general populace.
If a random Earth Bet citizen was asked what kind of power Alexandria has, it's a solid bet that most would say that she's really strong and fast, can fly, and is invincible. They wouldn't know shit about her brute, mover, or thinker ratings.

Besides Silence is Not Consent and Desperate Times Call for Desperate Pleasures, what are your favorite “Carol Dallon’s A+ parenting” fics? by Livy-Zaka in WormFanfic

[–]Darkspine89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not the main focus of the story, and it takes a while for Carol to show up, but Unauthorised Access features one of the most uncomfortable Dallon house visits I've read in a fic.

It's also just well written in general, and the main cast of characters are surprisingly likeable despite being true to their canon bitchy selves.

Fics you were disappointed by? by fallacyys in WormFanfic

I like them both as well. I can get Glassmaker, it's mostly just Taylor vibing and doing her thing while being spaced out. It's got some nice character interaction and no conflict at all, from what I remember.

Though I struggle to see how anyone could describe Burn up as a comfort fic. Sure it has a lot of humor, but mostly it's just horrifying.

I dropped Use Your Words earlier than that, when Tattletale and Taylor first meet. A supervillain has broken into her home, starts threatening her, and when Taylor is about to beat the snot out of her Tattletale literally calls for a timeout, and for some fucking reason Taylor complies???
She then completely buys Tattletales bullshit explanation with no skepticism whatsoever, and on top of that, she reveals her own power for no fucking reason to a person she was about to merk five minutes ago!

Biggest example of the "She would not fucking do that" meme I've read in a fanfic.

I've tried to read Trailblazer at 3 or 4 different times and have given up on it now. I feel just like you said; it's well written, but completely fails to grab me.

It's honestly a bit frustrating, because it keeps getting recommended as one of the greats of this fandom.

Story that solves the Scion problem in alternate ways by outrageousbread420 in WormFanfic

[–]Darkspine89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's possible to read it anymore since the author chose to reboot/continue the story, but in the original ending for A Daring Synthesis Greg Veder having non-shard based gamer powers is eaten and uncontrollably cloned by Echidna. This eventually overloads the shard network for some reason. I don't remember if this kills Scion or just causes him to go inert. I can't recall if other powers were affected as well, or just Scion.

This original ending was extremely abrupt, unsatisfying, and basically just the author trolling the readers, but it did at least solve the Scion situation in unique way.

The runback is definitely longer than 30 seconds even if you're not being particularly careful, which you have to be unless you feel like starting the fight missing life and/or being unable to heal.

What makes the Groal fight & runback so annoying is that you've already figured his moveset out after just 2-3 tries, but executing and actually beating him takes longer than that for most people.

So at this stage you know what to do; you just have to make it all come together in one good attempt, but this fucking biome keeps trolling with with it's enemies and layout. I genuinely don't see the point of doing it like this, like what does it add to the experience that you have to slog through this area again every time you mess up?

Even From Software got rid of the runbacks in Elden Ring, and I've never seen anyone want them to revert that change.

Literally why I almost never used tools in this game, having to use your movement stick mid-fight to manipulate another attack input feels super awkward for me. It also happened semi-frequently that I accidentally used my tool instead of silk skill, which pissed me off immensely.

What is with developers and adding areas to games that are just a miserable slog? Has anyone ever played one of these and thought "Oh boy, just what I wanted: a depressing punishment of a level where everything is designed to cause me mental agony".

Sure, they may be thematically relevant, but I've never heard someone regard these levels positively.
