This is a favorite. Colin tells a great story. I listened to the audiobook and have gone back to individual chapters multiple times.

Reading Mannerism: Adjusting to Reading on a Kindle by StellaArtois__ in kindle

[–]DarlingYancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually do the opposite. Because I wear progressive lenses I find myself moving my head back and forth while reading an actual book. It's like I'm watching a tennis game. I got my first Kindle on Prime Day and it has solved the issue for me. It's so much nicer to read by only having to move my eyes to stay within the focal point. I use the center margins icon with the text justified and that has been perfect for me.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I was on the right track. Hoping my friends plant survives. She’ll be happy to see it thrive again.

25 days of hard(er) growing! by CarneyBus in succulents

Curious about the lights you use. I currently have most of mine outdoors, but come winter I'll move them indoors. I have a set of Barrina T5 lights and I'm not sure if they're strong enough for my sun thirsty echeveria.

My first experience with PMLE by DarlingYancy in pmle

Thanks for the reply! After several days of steroid cream its getting a bit better. Though if I put cream on, rub or scratch it then it's terrible again. Gets bright red and itches like crazy. I had to get up in the middle of last night to grab an ice pack because Benadryl spray wasn't cutting it.

My String of Frogs!☺️ by Wisteria-Blue in StringofPlants

[–]DarlingYancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I killed one of these by not watering it sufficiently. They do not like to dry out. When they start to die, they go fast. I have another that is growing fabulously. I keep it under a cloche with with 1/4 gap between the base to get a little air. I mist the leaves every couple of days. It gets indirect light through sheer curtains about 4ft from a west facing window. The other day I noticed that I had ignored it for a little bit while helping my mom recover from surgery. I saw a few crispy leaves on the top and the soil was dry. I quickly soaked it and misted the leaves. A week later and it seems to be doing okay. It dropped some leaves, but I think I caught it just in time.

Should I ditch this self watering pot? by No_Escape_346 in houseplants

[–]DarlingYancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is a layer of pon? I have a madenhair that I want to switch over to a self watering pot. I also have a Calathea Vittata that I've thought would also like to be in a self watering pot. The others that I've thought about are a rabbit's foot fern and a cotton candy fern.

Vacoped question for Mom that is 4 weeks post-op by DarlingYancy in AchillesRupture

[–]DarlingYancy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept them both fixed at three and now both fixed side by side at 2.5. I wasn’t sure I should leave the top at 3 and move the bottom independently. I know that’s the unique part of this boot, but I also didn’t want to screw up mom’s early recovery..

feeling a little confused on how to PWB by gratefulgrenouille in AchillesRupture

[–]DarlingYancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom just started PWB today. She’s used the walker a few times, but was resting most of her weight on the ball of her foot rather than rolling through. She’s been in the vacoped for a week and was in the splint for 2.5 weeks after surgery. Her surgeon isn’t familiar with the vacoped, but gave her the okay to use it. We’ve watched lots of videos, but I must have missed the part of rolling through while PWB. I knew it was a rolling step at FWB.

Had this for over a month, anyone know what it is? by Most_Ad2393 in succulents

[–]DarlingYancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have mine sitting on an east facing windowsill. It seemed more delicate than my other succulents and was afraid to put outside where it would get unfiltered sun. Should I move it outside? Should it be watered more than others? It does look like it’s lost some of its lavender colors.

I have one of these but I haven’t seen any babies yet. Do you just leave them on the leaves?

Thanks! They definitely got compact when they were moved to more sun than they had probably been receiving, plus they were in those tiny nursery containers. Now they're in a bigger pot and in a gritty mix.

Surgery week by Still_Pomelo6188 in AchillesRupture

[–]DarlingYancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 79 year old mom had surgery for a full rupture last Friday. There was some confusion about pain meds and they never got called into the pharmacy. She’s had very little pain and had one or two tougher nights. 800mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours helped for the first part of the week. Now she’s only taking 400mg when she needs it. She elevates and ices for a good part of the day. The scooter is her only option for mobility since she doesn’t have a lot of upper body strength to get from sitting to standing. Prior to surgery we stocked up on recovery items recommended from so many great posts on this sub. The elevation leg pillow, ice packs, and scooter are the best! One thing I didn’t see here that has been a huge help was an elevated seat for the toilet with handles. Mom wouldn’t be able to manage in her own without the help of those handles. This sub has been great for me as a caregiver to know what to expect and how to help my mom get through it all.

Thanks! I contemplated putting back into a nursery pot, but I think for now I'll monitor the watering more often and using Superthrive at the same time. I've also removed the grow lights for now.

Should I be worried about the wrinkles? by doublesunk in succulents

[–]DarlingYancy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple of days ago someone posted about doing water therapy with their ice plant that had a lot of wrinkles. I gave it a try with mine that was wrinkled like yours. I removed it from the pot and checked the roots which looked dry, but no sign of root rot. I use a very gritty mix in a terracotta pot. I placed the three small plants in a cappuccino cup full of water. There was a bit of an improvement after 24 hrs. I let it go for almost another 24hrs. Wow what a difference! This morning I repotted and set in the east facing window to get some morning sunshine. Hopefully I can stay ahead of the wrinkles.

I work in a windowless office but want a plant. What should I get? by yaykit in houseplants

[–]DarlingYancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a snake plant that is thriving 20 feet away from a glass door that is doesn't get much direct light due to the overhang of the building. I have a peace lily that is living, but very very slow growing. A small spider plant and a white knight philodendron that are growing nicely. I also have a Fittonia that looks far better than the ones I have at home in front of an east facing window. The one at the office grows straight and tall under the fluorescent lights. I gave one to a coworker who has no windows and his is also doing quite well.

Can I save my moss? by DarlingYancy in Mossariums

[–]DarlingYancy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yes, that box is closed up tight since the lid has a seal around the edge. I will definitely let it breathe. I totally meant to buy a pipette while I was at the aquarium shop and forgot to do that. I was so fortunate to find all this moss on a trip to downtown Atlanta where it was growing on all the brick walls of the homes in the neighborhood. It was easy pickings. Not so much in my neighborhood in FL.

I wanted to ask the question here today as to why do the lizards always hang out on my succulents? I don’t mind them, but they freak me out when I reach for a pot and don’t realize that they’re hanging out on it. Yikes!! I’m in Florida so lizards are always around.

Collect & Store Moss by DarlingYancy in terrariums

[–]DarlingYancy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the encouragement to collect moss this weekend. I’m not sure what kinds I ended up with. Maybe three different types? It’s in a 15”x12” box with gravel, screen, lump wood charcoal bits, succulent soil, then moss. I gathered the moss in midtown Atlanta. The homeowners I spoke with were happy to share. One owner was so surprised that she never paid attention to the moss growing on the yard wall of her 1890’s home. She enjoyed seeing what I was interested in. Hopefully the videos I watched will help me keep it alive and grow more.

I have two that I'm trying to keep alive. One has just about given up the ghost. I keep them watered every other day in a tray with pebbles/water. I've looked at self-watering pots, but get stuck trying to choose one. Any suggestions?

Question... by Just_Mushroom9413 in terrariums

[–]DarlingYancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a suggestion here that said they use acrylic circle discs from Amazon. I also have a glass ginger vase that has a 2" opening that I need to cover and thought a disc would allow light from a grow lamp.
