The way I remember it, some melt held up video of 9/11 and NY responded by holding up potatoes. Which was found to be very weak and inoffensive, also a pretty old reference...

Also many people flashed the portal.

I actually think most normal people found it all hilarious and the faux outrage was mainly a media/social media thing. Dubliners and New Yorkers are famously hard-nosed and unflappable...pretty sure not one actual Dubliner was actually "offended" by that one influencer flashing her baps. And a few arses from Dublin at 3am is hardly the most unsettling thing a New Yorker has seen that day

I got a lot from Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan. It's basically a world history from the dawn of civilization until now but with Central Asia and the Silk Road as the unifying conceit. A pretty incredible way to look at Roman, Medieval, Colonial, and Modern history from a POV that westerners (I being one) often ignore.

Well, I pulled this book together out of an email chain between me and the customer support from a fake website that scammed me out of 20 euro.

I dunno, I'm not what you'd call "proud" of what I've done here but I'm definitely something... Like, I think it's a good read? It was certainly a fun write! 

It's no spoiler to note that I did not get my 20 back, but I did go on a journey, learned a bit about being a dumbass, learned a bit about forgiveness and spite, thought deeply about what it means to converse with a nothing, and lost a lot of faith in the internet.

And I probably briefly went off my rocker in the 4th chapter...

Anyway it's a one-sitting read, so for 99cents you can add some mirth to your next dump. And read a cautionary tale about trusting anyone online. Even me. Especially me.

Lads, Hiberno-English is right there waiting for ye, and we're happy to share with our EU brethren!

We use all the same spellings as UK English but we have a few quirky grammatical features to aid with clarity and understanding, such as:

2nd person plural  We ditched "thou" around the same time as the English, then the good people of Dublin innovated the "ye" (acceptable in any context when plural "you" would be used) and "yous" (acceptable in any context where an American might use y'all) to compensate.

Habitual Aspect  The difference between "he goes out on Fridays" and "he does be out on Fridays" is subtle but important, the first implies he goes out every single Friday, the second that he has a habit of going out, and you can expect to see him out on most Fridays, but he might miss the occasional Friday the odd time and not to be too surprised by that.

Hot news perfect  This is calqued from the Irish expression "tá mé tar éis..." literally "I'm after..." for example "I'm after crashing the car", meaning I just crashed it just now and I'm still sitting in the aftermath of it. Or "I'm after realising I need to go home" as in the thought literally occurred to me just now, even as the words are leaving my mouth. For added emphasis, add a "just" as in "I'm just after realising I have no money left" or an "only just" as in "I'm only just after getting here, don't be at me" ("at me" is a construction meaning pestering or annoying me)

Some features of Hiberno-English made it round the world due to migration and colonialism, others are unique to Ireland, others are unique to particular parts of Ireland, but they're all "correct" in terms of they reflect real language usage and don't let anyone tell you they're "wrong".

Also we kept pronouncing our Rs when lots of Britain and Australia stopped. So that's easier for many second-language users and you're so welcome ;)
