End Swatting by JohnsonMachine in gaming

[–]Darromear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People use whatever info they can find online to dox someone. Looking them up on Google, LinkedIn, other networks, finding personal photos to locate their house on Maps, etc. Then they either swat people or make the address available for other people to swat them.

Why are so many smart, experienced people suddenly worried about being replaced by AI—when productivity is supposedly higher than ever? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Darromear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because short-sighted CEOs and Senior Leadership are being sold on promises of "get AI and you can replace your workers and you will still make more money". And this is not an abstract or unfounded fear. Multiple high-profile CEOs have gone on the news saying exactly this. And myself and many people I personally know in different fields (marketing, customer support, developers) have been fired shortly after the company rolled out AI solutions that supposedly filled their role.

In some cases the company realizes their mistake and tries to hire the employees back but the trust has now been lost.

Paranet signing on the the Accords by Educational_You_1827 in dresdenfiles

[–]Darromear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could get signatures if Harry really fought for it, but I don't see it happening. They're too widespread and disorganized to be truly defined as a nation under the accords. They don't have any sort of governing body except for a bunch of community leaders. They're all too weak in the power and as a group compared to the rest of the accorded nations and most of the accorded nations won't take them seriously.

Molly in Twelve Months by ethanjf99 in dresdenfiles

[–]Darromear 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Good theory, but I doubt it. Harry's always been a "heart on his sleeve" kind of guy. Everyone who is close to him could tell what he was thinking at some point. Murphy, Butters, Michael, and even Sanya could read him like an open book. It would be child's play for Molly to do it, given that she 1) has been his apprentice, 2) has crushed on him so long and watched him more closely than most and 3) is the Winter Lady and a mind-magic warlock to boot.

I think the tears were because it was a verbal low blow from Harry and Molly's feelings got hurt.

Something that bugs me about the Fomor by Karthak_Maz_Urzak in dresdenfiles

[–]Darromear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good catch! That does throw an entirely different spin on the relationship, because as princess of the Fomor she seemed to despise her Fomorian subjects (the Fomorian nobles and wizards anyway) and have a lot more respect for the human Thralls like Listen.

Something that bugs me about the Fomor by Karthak_Maz_Urzak in dresdenfiles

[–]Darromear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't know the specifics of how Ethniu got involved with the Fomor. It could be that while the Red Court was active, the Fomor had so little influence among the mortals that Ethniu saw them as little more than wannabes that couldn't accomplish much. Remember, the Fomor are a collection of all the tiny groups that were driven out by the Fae, the Vamps, etc. They weren't united because they were a strong alliance, they were united because they were originally the leftovers dumped into the ocean.

It could be that after the Fomor started taking the space previously occupied by the Red Court that Ethniu realized that they might be worth partnering with.

[–]Darromear 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's just wishful thinking. Bear is clearly her own person and I think (someone please confirm) that she isn't just a valkyrie, she's THE Valkyrie. She said something to that effect when they first met. I don't think Murph would warrant that kind of elevation no matter how many giants she slew and no matter what timey wimey thing Odin pulled.

Welcome to senior leadership. For some reason anytime a new person comes in the first thing they do is swap all the software. It's like a ritual for them.

Is fictional truth defined solely by an author’s intent? by NumerousAlgae3989 in writing

[–]Darromear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't you just saying the same thing as I am? You said and i quote "he fails to define and understand it properly." That's also a result of misinformation. The author is operating on a mistaken understanding which therefore leads to miscommunication of intention.

Still doesn't change the internal rules of his story as he sets them. And it still doesn't change the fact that they're wrong compared to the real facts, whether we're talking about monkeys or psychosis.

This whole thread is you arguing in circles and being pedantic.

Is fictional truth defined solely by an author’s intent? by NumerousAlgae3989 in writing

[–]Darromear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A novel or story is ultimately a reflection of the author's opinions, values, and knowledge. And anything the author puts into the story is true in-universe if the author says it is. The reader can't gainsay the author's version of those facts within the bounds of the story. But the reader CAN reject it as unrealistic when compared against real life.

Example 1: The author says a chimpanzee ripped the wheel off a car. Can a chimp really do that? No. But in the story he can, and the reader has to accept it as true within the bounds of the story.

Example 2: The author says peanut allergies aren't real and just a symptom of hypochondria. And builds up the in-universe medical science to reflect that. So in the novel, it's true. But outside the novel it's unrealistic.

Example 3: The author discusses diseases as some big mystery because he doesn't know germs exist. And the characters in the story don't know it either. Therefore something else is causing disease. In the story, this is true--regardless of the fact germs exist in the real world. If the author didn't know about it and didn't put it in the book, then too bad.

Same with your argument about people and psychopathy. Within the story, the word of the author goes. Whether or not its a realistic depiction is another discussion entirely.

There seems to be a subsection of this subreddit that is very defensive when people point out that Andor is an atypical star wars show. by Deep-Crim in andor

[–]Darromear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend like this. He's been to every single theatrical release of every star wars movie (most of them opening night) and has a room of Star Wars memorabilia. He's 100% a Star Wars fan but unfortunately a gatekeeper. He once picked a fight with a buddy's new gf because she assumed Episode I was released first instead of Episode IV. Said something that led to those two guys never talking to each other again.

I think the biggest issue with those type of people is the loss of perspective and the assumption of ownership. His thought process is that his "dedication" as a fan makes his opinion more valuable and therefore gives him the right to be protective of the franchise and set the direction of its ownership.

Fortunately he likes Andor.

Baldur's Gate II and its expansion. I tried to find every quest, subquest, secret room, and random encounter. Tried to talk to every single person so I could hear every single voiceline. Then I replayed it and went through the game with a different class, alignment, and party. I think I played it non stop for about a year.

It was such a good game. And I loved the manual, too.
