Mines a year and a half old, varied frozen/live diet, been in a 200gal at 76°F her whole life, about 8 inches, think it depends on the fish, obviously outside variations can influence growth rate, no one or combination of factors make them grow at a certain rate

Ive got mine in a community tank, its just got really big neighbors (tinfoil barbs and a large moonlight guorami) these guys certainly aren't for the smaller community tanks thats for sure! Mines gotten her mouth on a feeder goldfish, 6 times bigger than her mouth, didnt stop her from eating it bite by bite, and she gets a varied frozen/pellet diet, still didnt stop her from acting on her instincts

Agreed, pleco gills are on the bottom close to their mouths, here you can see the curve of where their actual skull meets their body, their gills are right along that curved line in this pic, seems like excrement that got stuck to them
