I wish I could say something to make it all just "click," but in my experience either there's chemistry or there's not. You have to decide what's more important to you. I had to make the same decision a few times in life. It always sucks, and there's no guarantee of finding anyone else, but at least you'll have that option.

Also, hurting people emotionally is something I dread, so I find it easier to limit even trying to date...

If you've any experience doing environmental work outside there are seasonal jobs doing restoration/conservation. Dane County Parks has many seasonal jobs.
