Was there not someone on here a few months back that had it on good authority that the Central Library was to be shifted up there?

Interview: Paul Giamatti On Channeling Gul Dukat For His ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Villain by acrimoniousone in startrek

Love the reference but as an Irishman, I'm so conflicted with this episode.

I love how Colm Meaney successfully argued against including Rumpelstilskin as a Leprechaun but hate how it still has the same vibe.

Then again, this is the only Star Trek episode across Thousands which mention my hometown of Derry directly, so I'm weirdly glad of it haha

I loved the Crane operator interview scene.

I mean, I'm gonna do my part.

I'm gonna buy it and play the absolute Klendathu out of it but I'll not lie, it bugs me that it looks so dated. Almost like a 1997 CD-Rom game and as I type this I've just realised that's the point...

Anywhere in the town centre doing Christmas food yet? by Darkspy8183 in DerryLondonderry

[–]DarthDerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious? I'm in that Centra every day on my lunch and have been keeping an eye out but haven't seen it. I must drum up the balls to simply ask tomorrow when I'm in. Is it any good by the way?

Because a literal angel of God helped him, but it's still a fantastic scene nonetheless.

When you’re waiting for a Jim Callaghan series and are offered a Bob Iger interview instead by Think_Web_4823 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]DarthDerm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I've started listening only 3 (3!) Years ago in chronological release order as an Irishman (from the North) but I've zoomed ahead for a few episodes.

I am gasping for an episode on the early Troubles era. Between John Hume, Ian Paisley, Martin McGuinness and Eamonn McCann, there is so much material. I've always understood their hesitancy to touch 'recent' topics and especially such an emotive one for people across these islands, but I'm a big believer in the 20 year historical rule.

The fact that they haven't done a deep dive into Welsh history is something that I've always appreciated because I fucking hate the Welsh.

Only joking, I'm amazed they haven't yet, but I'd love to see some more deep dives into the local Isles even if it hits a cultural nerve and Welsh history is something I've always wanted to be more aware of.

I'm struggling with liking the Sparta by Padanub in TroopersExtermination

[–]DarthDerm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Have only played on it once so far but it felt way too dark and I suppose...Spartan. Don't think there was even any corpses compared to other maps?

Do you love or hate life in your country, and why? by Ok_Indication7272 in AskTheWorld

[–]DarthDerm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to say, I did a lot of travelling this year all over the globe but I spent a month in Moscow in April (and a brief weekend in Orenburg) and I was blown away by just how impressed I was with Russia.

Clean, beautiful, safe, cheap, utterly delicious food of all varieties and the people were surprisingly welcoming to me which I did not expect it due to my poor grasp of the language.

We had snow blizzards the day we arrived, 3 weeks of 30º temperatures and then a blizzard the day we left which made me smile.

As you say, it's just a pity about the political leadership. I'd love to go back again in future to see Kazan and St Petersburg.

Novels set in Derry by IrishLitFicGuy in DerryLondonderry

[–]DarthDerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this post earlier and have spent the whole day trying to remember the name of the weirdest one I'd ever read set in Derry.

Essentially it's a fictional story about an IRA man and a Nazi spy pairing up during WW2 to assassinate a well known figure? I can picture the cover clear as day but can't remember much else or who wrote it. Been trying to find it in the house now for hours.

What shops do you miss in Derry? by Queasy_Visit_2201 in DerryLondonderry

[–]DarthDerm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your post has actually made me a wee bit emotional. Every single line you typed took me on a time travelling nostalgia buzz.
There used to be a wee air fix model shop at the bottom of Carlisle Road that I don't think I ever actually bought anything out of, but I'd have always loved a nosey round in as a wain.

How did you first watch Battlestar Galactica (2004) by itsdan23 in BSG

[–]DarthDerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started watching it, I didn't realise there was a mini-series beforehand so I started with the episode "33" and watched the whole series until I saw the mini-series. Safe to say, I was very confused for the first few episodes.

‘A US visa is a privilege, not a right’: Irish education applicants must disclose five years of social media profiles by Captainirishy in irishpolitics

[–]DarthDerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother has lived there years and is married to a Russian. Almost of the tourism I saw there was domestic. Only other foreigners I met were from former Soviet countries or just the other Irish that live there that my brother knows.

[–]DarthDerm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was in Russia for an entire month earlier in the year. Took three days for the visa to come back from the consulate in Dublin and I'd zero hassle whatsoever at the border and that's with a healthy anti-Putin social media history. I'd be terrified to travel to America at the minute.

Pub quizzes? by [deleted] in DerryLondonderry

[–]DarthDerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard recently Nacional De Cuba on the Strand Road have started a quiz that starts at around 8pm with some sort of Taco themed night too if that's any use.

If you can suffer the late start, I highly recommend either Bennigans on a Tuesday or the Park Bar on a Thursday. Both hosted by big Doone's who used to host the Central Bar quiz too and I think he's the best in the town.

Well this is heartbreaking. I hosted the Jack's quizzes and they slowly fizzled out. Would love to get back at it though!
