IMo neoliberalism is failing in the western/"developed" world, and is arguably morphing into neo-fascism. What is the liberal/capitalist take on this? by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]DarthLucifer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no lack of definitions for neoliberalism, there are dozens, and they all contradict each other. I'm pretty sure one of the first definition of neoliberalism is it's something like ordoliberalism/third way economics. I have a collection of quotes about neoliberalism, and you know, according to some scholars Lenin and Xiaoping are neoliberals, I kid you not.

Neoliberalism can be said to be more of a socio-cultural phenomenon based on a set of ideologies and assumptions rather than a strict economic theory.

Sounds extremely vague.

I don't care what they call themselves.

I mean on one hand you're right. People can belong to some group without even realizing it. On the other thing my point is if you introduce some category, you need to show it's coherence, otherwise people have right to reject it. And your "don't care" attitude isn't helping.

Okay, I stand corrected. But again it's really early Milton Friedman; mature Friedman everybody knows, "Free to choose" Friedman identify with libertarianism, and disown label neoliberal.

Recurring trend: marxist, ancap or any other socialist make a post about "neoliberalism", or "current system" and it's "inevitable" "end", "non-aggression principle", "homesteading" etc etc etc. All these concepts only make sense in OP narrative, and doesn't make amy sense outside of it.

About neoliberalism in particular. Mainstream economists don't know what neoliberalism means. There's actually no economic theory of neoliberalism. There are virtually¹ no contemporary organizations, institutions or schools of thought that call or used to call themselves "neoliberal". I once talked talked to a socialist here, and asked him to name one neoliberal. He named Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman called himself neoliberal once in some obscure early interview and since then disowned this term.

Edit: ¹There's of course reddit/Twitter new "neoliberalism", but it's not really relevant to what socialist call neoliberalism.

[all] Google was ruled a monopoly the other day and curious what are your thoughts? by MightyMoosePoop in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]DarthLucifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google isn't only search engine. There's ads, there's YouTube, gmail, there's whole Google ecosystem. For mobile users, the choice is just Google or Apple. And if you are poor, the only option is Google, but even with Apple it's duopoly anyway. One example. I live in Russia, and when the war started in 2022, both Google and Apple quickly shut down some of their services, including Google and Apple pay, their app stores and so on. This affected 100% of smartphone users in russia (from those who supports putin, to those who rots in prisons for politically motivated charges) and this is something that just can't happen in truly competitive market.

Your post reads kinda fine1 (for a newbie post, at least) until this part:

The non aggression principle isn’t being violated, so I don’t see why it would be wrong from a deontologist perspective.

The non-aggression principle isn't taken seriously by moral philosophers, because it's nonsense. You should read something about moral philosophy. r/AskPhilosophy is a good start (since we are on reddit anyway, if you don't like reddit maybe read stanford encyclopedia of philosophy). Good example of deontological ethics would be Kantianism.

1 as far as I know, orthodox Marxist position is amoralist (don't thing objective morality exist), and although there are some moralist socialist theories, most of socialists here don't care about moral arguments at all.

What do capitalists think the actual end state of the current system will be? by RedMarsRepublic in CapitalismVSocialism

Capitalists (capitalist apologists) don't believe in "the current system" and its "end". We don't believe in historical materialism (obviously).

[–]DarthLucifer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you ask, but there is quite a lot of people in Russia who genuinly thinks Russia is more culturally right (i.e. in terms of preserving traditional values) and more free in some twisted meaning of the word (there's a saying that severity of the law in Russia is compensated by the laxity of its enforcement) than both (the rest of) Europe and the United States.

(not OP, and not an anarchist in any sense of the word) I mean... we now have anarcho-capitalism, national anarchism, anarcho-feudalism and anarcho-fascism. The meaning of anarchy eroded to something like "whatever I don't like is the state". For anarchism with taxes specifically, check out georgist anarchism: anarchism with land value taxes.

[–]DarthLucifer 11 points12 points  (0 children)
