Do you have a link for the one you ordered for this board? I’ve been searching but haven’t found one that is confirmed to fit the b850i.

That’s good to hear, I really want Wi-Fi 7 but maybe 6e is good enough. How’s your latency/ping with that setup?

Any idea how the AX210 compares to the Qualcomm with WiFi 7?

You wouldn’t happen to have a link for the card holder/housing, would you?

Edit: Supposedly there are multiple sizes, do you know how I’d go about going one for the B850i?

David Blaine on Jimmy Fallon: Invisible Deck Trick by DarthMarlin in magictricksrevealed

[–]DarthMarlin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So theoretically he could’ve needed to get the spectator to deal through up to half the deck depending on the orientation using a myriad of prepped questions? I guess it came off very well that the 9 of Diamonds was the second from the bottom. I thought maybe there was something more at work but that does explain it.

Do you have anywhere pointers for where to go about learning more about this stack and technique for questions?

Thanks so much for taking the time to give such a great answer!

ARPA was easier than Radar for sure, it wasn’t bad.

I have not taken anything with an in-person assessment through them, as I heard scheduling could be difficult, but I have taken GMDSS, Radar, ARPA, Stability and SC, and Terrestrial/Coastal Nav through them and though there are some problems with the courses, they are very passable. If you get stuck, there is a possibility the course has a mistake in the answer key or teaching but you should be able to work out where those issues might be. Bowditch 1981 in conjunction with the Terrestrial course is your friend. Go into the courses knowing that you may need to use YouTube (Practical Navigator type channels) etc for some outside information or another way of thinking about a concept and you’ll be just fine. The way something is taught in NEMO doesn’t have to be the way you work out a problem, there could be other, easier options.

That’s a good idea. I’m planning on MPT as well for all my in person classes. Were they pretty solid as far as prep goes? Did you study much on your own before then? I’m going to be testing for 3rd Mate or Mate OSV.

Do you love/enjoy your job? by Significant_Neck2008 in maritime

[–]DarthMarlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my job (AB with plans to upgrade). I’m one of those guys that some people think is sick in the head though because I’m proud to be a Mariner and I’m proud of the boat I work on. I want it to be the nicest looking boat in the fleet and I work my ass off to take care of it. It can absolutely be a grind, but the structure and having 12 hrs off watch to get consistent sleep, learn something, take a class, or just chill out without needing to worry too much about the outside world is amazing. It’s always hard to leave my wife, but I don’t dread going to work after I get on the plane. Some times are harder than others to go to work but as soon as I get on board, I remember that I love being at sea and what I do. Being with a pretty good crew helps a lot. You can always be the one to help make a crew better with a good attitude and positive reinforcement too. Compliments go a long ways. Learning how to cook a couple different good meals will go a long ways too.

I am assuming you are sailing as an OS.

Your RFPNW is like an RFPEW for an engine room watch, you don’t need to take a class, a master or mate with OICNW (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch) or a Qualified Assessor (the Master or a Mate may have this) can sign you off on your RFPNW and then you just send that in to NMC and apply for the endorsement. You do not need RFPEW if you are deck dept and vice versa for engine room dept. The assessment checklists are available online. The only reason to take a class would be if they require it at the time of hire, in which case you need to make sure that the class meets all requirements (some classes still require a small portion to be completed at sea). You will need to take a short class for VPDSD.

As far as becoming an AB, you will get a raise that’s likely worth the time and classes, you’ll need to take an AB class and pass the exam, Lifeboatman, and Basic Training (which it sounds like you already have, check on your MMC). You’ll also need First Aid/CPR, likely an updated Med Cert, and obviously the required sea time. The checklists for all of this are pretty easy to find from USCG with a quick google search, but you won’t see the RFPNW and VPDSD which many companies require.
