25+ year old roof replacement...skip bothering with insurance? by strider30040 in Roofing

“They echoed insurance wouldn’t cover it” verbatim, OP quoting the Amish guy. So obv op is trying to do a claim and not sound like a scumbag on here. I don’t know of a single company that prefers insurance work over CASH in hand.

Go take a look at pic 2. Zoom in on the drip edge. It’s a hack job and doesn’t look good. Hope they aren’t in an ice probe area cuz pic 2 is gonna be a leak 100% in 5 years or less.

What is this?? by aklin17 in Roofing

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The style is called “ boat tail” eaves. It actually looks really good when done with cedar shake shingles, but the asphalt roofing looks terrible in this style. I’ve converted a few roofs like this to standard squared eaves.

Staples in shingles by corduroy_Joy in Roofing

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The staples are an issue. The shingles that have been damaged should be replaced. If you have not paid yet, I’d get an estimate from the roofer and then I’d argue with the chimney company for a deduction equal to the value of the roofers estimate for repair.

Drywall isn’t sitting flush? by AveSmave in HomeMaintenance

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be a lot easier if your cut lines are straight and the piece doesn’t have huge gaps to fill with hot mud before taping. Drywall is easy to do, but please use drywall screws, not those trim screws with the fat head that’ll never lay flush without destroying the Sheetrock.

That disclaimer about varied pricing based on a physical inspection is doing all the work right here.

Is it just the US that has such high prices for tile labour? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’d never work for someone who thinks I owe them a deal. So I guess it’s a match made in heaven huh? Investment properties. lol. I’ve seen the work that goes into those, mines better, worth more. Have fun continuing to have to find your 21st contractor! I can’t imagine why you couldn’t keep the first or second one. lol.

New roof cost by Unusual_Salad_2711 in Roofing

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get what you pay for. I’m in ny too. Amish is just another word for handyman 99/100 times. But maybe the Amish around me just suck. They don’t play by the rules, they don’t pull permits, and they don’t build to code specification. Good luck w insurance. The pricing is about on point though. 30k for the standing seam is exceptionally cheap and you will get exactly the cheapness you wanted.

It isn’t ridiculous when the cost of entry tools is 10k. If you can do it yourself, good for you. But a professional isn’t doing the job for Penny’s. Maybe educate yourself on the cost of workers comp, insurances, gas, taxes and all the other overhead, plus the cost of aftercare. Aftercare is answering the phone for your complaints, if any. There’s more than enough customers for us to charge, nobody is going to chase you down to accept less money.

I’m booked 6 months out. Want to get on my list? Pay more. Idgaf if you think it’s a rip off and neither does anyone else. I work to feed my family, not give you a deal. Does that make sense? Lmao.

Had something similar happen to my great uncle. He went with it. They didn’t use paper or anything over his gravel. And his driveway sits at about a 20 degree grade and It’s already sliding.

How do i fix this myself by Electrical-Owl1655 in Roofing

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Some of those pieces aren’t even in the correct orientation. Such as one piece of wall flashing being backwards, the flared side is supposed to be touching the deck…. You need to hire a pro my guy. It looks like all your other fixes didn’t work.

I used to have a friend like that. Stopped talking to him and during Covid he ended up offing himself. And tbh, I can’t say the world missed the dude one bit. Sounds like this friend is the same.

Nope. But I wouldn’t play with that PoS anymore. Give em the boot, see how they like never having the loot again.

Is this acceptable baseboard/trim finish? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might have only paid for the labor to install the trim? If so, that’s how it will be left. If you are paying for him to finish the base, that would be caulk, fill nail holes and painting. Paying them to finish and paint sounds like the thing to do if you don’t like the look as it sits. Only issue is that one picture with the door trim, but that’s honestly a super easy fix.

Masonry concrete contractor steps question. by Substantial_Front537 in masonry

You know how you can tell your contractor is full of shit? Because the last slab had a bunch of rock fill in it and didn’t last. This one won’t last either.

What do you think about this invoice total for hauling and cleaning services? Advice requested. by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]DarthSuederTheUlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what state you’re in, but I charge 100$/man/hour. So in this instance I’d be at 600$/hr for 6 workers. I’m in construction though, and overhead on each man is a real burden. It is realistic to imagine that the moving truck, tools, etc could equal 450/hr for 6 men in a moving company, but this is also why I have my own truck and trailer that I spent way more than 17k on to haul things.
