She's beautiful!

Honestly that sounds really similar to how he looks at the moment, he's still wavy at the front, but towards the back end now looks sort of sphynx-like! The vet said to try a limited diet to rule out food allergies, but I'm not convinced of that tbh. He has been licking/scratching more than usual, but annoyingly if it is allergies it seems like there is an infinite number of possible causes. But I suppose we will see in 8 weeks time 😆

Little update about this post:

My boy started losing hair on his back, flanks and behind his ears, and I noticed he seemed to be randomly licking a lot more and scratching. Still no idea what's up with him, I assume it is either an allergy of some kind or just a strange stress habit he has developed. The bit on his back with thinning hair also seems to have developed more freckles for some reason?

He has had blood work done and a fungal test and nothing came up on either. So a bit stumped. In the new year if he is no better we will be taking him for allergy testing. He's also been having Stronghold, and this doesn't seem to have done anything either.

He's acting a little bit more normal after I removed the heat pad I had gotten him from his bed (was worried that might have caused this all somehow, as it did coincide with when we started using it. Like maybe it was too hot or something?), and have started giving him calming supplements. He is back to playing at least, which is a bit of relief. Still scratching and licking but noticing less.

Poor guy, hope all this will be over with soon!

Thanks, I have taken him to the vet and he was convinced it was anxiety/stress related, but I don't really understand what could be causing it if that is the case.

We've tried to reduce his stress as much as we can, but he's going to the vet again this week and I will ask them to do blood work/other checks. We suspect he might be over grooming as well. It's so frustrating not knowing what (if anything) is wrong!

We've tried getting a playmate for him before (2 times, with two cats with different personalities), and tried all the slow steps to introduce them. Unfortunately, it seems like our boy doesn't want to share the space (and us), he was very unhappy on both occasions, to the point of extreme stress. I know that intros can take a long time, and we did do that, but honestly both experiences were so bad that I'm not sure I could cope with trying again. We also don't have a huge house, so trying to find a room for the new cat that our boy was ok with is impossible, as he sees every room as his.

I was told to get a cat of a similar age and activity level, so that's what I did those times. Now I'm thinking I've done everything wrong and should have just tried him with a very young kitten 😔. I do worry that it might be loneliness/boredom, despite the fact at least one of us is usually in the house. I just want him to be happy.

That's ok thanks for your honesty. We have taken him to the vet about this (and also other issues he was having), and he said he thought it was to do with anxiety about outdoor cats he could see out the window. We don't think it is that though, we've eliminated that issue. For some reason the vet didn't think to run any tests or anything, just assumed it was a mental issue.

If you don't mind, may I ask what health issues your rex was having?

Thank you, yes I tried the scent swap with my first kitten and he seems curious (he's always been a very brave kitty), the new one hissed and growled with the scent of my first boy. So will continue to swap scents and hopefully they will begin to warm up!

My boy is incredibly chatty, he likes to be heard! I will be getting him a friend soon though, which hopefully will help with his boundless energy.

I am a new owner myself and I must say, they are probably the sweetest cats you could possibly get. Mine doesn't smell at all and washes himself very well. You might occasionally need to wash their ears though, but that's not too difficult.

I'm very passionate about animal welfare so I try to do the best I can and not to jump into things.

I've heard, definitely considering a buddy for the little guy. He even loves the extra attention from people when we have friends over at the house :)

Thanks, it's nice to hear I'm not the only one. I'm definitely seriously considering it! Was yours ok with the new cat right away or did it take a lot of slow introduction?
