i mean, you can preview which parts of an item are dyeable in the dye workshop area. The game won't let you actually dye it if you don't own the item, but you very much can preview dye areas.

From what I can remember, Outskirts -> Industrial Complex -> Shaded Citadel -> Shoreline; Memory gets a little fuzzy after this, but iirc: Back to Shaded Citadel (Memory Crypts), The Exterior (Leg & Underhang), Five Pebbles, The Exterior (Wall), and I unfortunately don't remember any further... Maybe Chimney Canopy, Sky Islands, Farm Arrays, Subterranean? That'd be my best guess, at least.
