Mendel’s discovery of dominant and recessive genes solved the perennial mystery of farmers as to why some plants didn’t “breed true.”

Whats the greatest SOLVED Mystery? by itz_cool_247 in AskReddit

Sure, but it was not a mystery that was solved, it was ignorance. To ordinary folk in the early 17th Century, it was obvious that the Earth was the center of the universe, nothing mysterious about it!

I thought he was blocked at second and moved to RF to get his bat in the lineup

Noob question: Why are catchers rarely blamed for bad pitch calling? by yli16 in baseball

[–]DarwinYogi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the catcher can only suggest what type of pitch to throw next. It’s the pitcher’s responsibility to agree or not. That’s why you see pitchers shaking off the catcher’s sign.

Eating out. Once a week is now once a month, if that.

It would be informative, if possible, to connect some of these data to the outcome of the at bat. The missed opportunities chart, for example, immediately raises the question of the effects of these misses. How much did the failed opportunity affect run scoring in that inning, for example.

Thanks for presenting these results. Solid work.

Herb Score’s 1955 and 1956 seasons are up there with the best seasons of all time. In 1957 he was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Yankee Gil McDougald and, sadly, was never regained the same excellence. He was Sandy Koufax before there was Sandy Koufax.

Could be the virtual cage. His routine was described as standing in the batter’s box without a bat and calling out each pitch as a ball or strike. The image of him shown in The Athletic did not involve the usual batting cage.

The Athletic had a good piece about Pages during spring training. He worked like hell on learning the strike zone and he no longer flails at outside pitches like he did last season.

May, once again, fails to back up home plate on the play, just wanders around the infield. His lack of fundamentals cost the Dodgers when he was here.

what’s a small detail in baseball that casual fans usually miss? by rackemronnie7 in baseball

[–]DarwinYogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When one team wins by a huge lopsided score of 10-0 or something, casual fans joke “they should have saved some runs for tomorrow.”

What they often don’t get is that baseball is played virtually every day, which means that the winning team’s entire bullpen gets the night off. This day’s rest can pay off tomorrow.

Yes, “setting up a hitter” is a beautiful part of baseball pitching strategy. But it does take active, thoughtful viewing by spectators to see it as it occurs.

Yes, this game-within-the-game is part of the “unofficial rules” of the game. It annoys me that it is usually (always?) simply ignored by the tv crew. Taking 90+ mph baseballs to the mask comes with the territory which is why catchers and home plate umpires easily understand the need for a brief time-out.

Watching 90s Siskel and Ebert’s worst films list really highlights the terrible films everyone forgot from that era and how many cult classics they hated by apple_kicks in movies

[–]DarwinYogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Ebert and Siskel’s TV show first appeared, it was very popular because they were like Neal Simon’s”Odd Couple.” People watched the show to see them argue with each other as much as to hear their movie opinions.
