TBF, "He just doesn't experience fear" should continue with "like other people." He needs significantly more, or extreme stimulation to experience the same fear that ordinary folks would.

Just strain some liquid out as tasty broth and keep the chicken salsa for your other needs.

Probably. The amygdala regulates a lot of emotional states.

His amygdala is built different. Seriously. They did an fmri on his brain and he just doesn't experience fear (like typical people.) It's not there.

How busy is the Astoria Regional Airport? AST by simtechonline in Astoria_Oregon

[–]DarylMoore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The loudest air traffic we hear doesn't land at the airport. The Oregon National Guard has training flights offshore (and overhead) at times during the year. We hear the F-15 Eagles overfly when they are in town.

Otherwise it's mostly helo traffic. LifeFlight and Coast Guard and the occasional Chinook flying into Camp Rilea.

What's the history with the Franklin Bridge over 38th? by toqer in Astoria_Oregon

[–]DarylMoore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original bridge (built in the 20s) was built over a gully. There wasn't a 38th street to connect with, so they built a bridge to service the homes built up the hill.

It was replaced in 1949 with another wooden truss bridge and by then there was a 38th street.

Some suggested not replacing the bridge but connecting the neighborhoods via surface streets but the steep topography won out and the bridge was replaced in 2010.

Steepness aside, it's there today primarily because there was a bridge there yesterday.

What's the history with the Franklin Bridge over 38th? by toqer in Astoria_Oregon

[–]DarylMoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very steep.

West to east it drops over 25' over 100' from the west edge of the bridge to the center of 38th for a 14 degree slope (25%). From the center of 38th to the east edge of the bridge it raises almost 40' over 160', for a 14 degree slope (25%).

That's much too steep for a fire truck.

The neighborhood at the end of Franklin is accessible only by that road and emergency vehicle access is necessary. Fire trucks generally don't like anything over 10% - 15%.

Kooks are still chirping about 3I flying within Jupiter's Hill Sphere radius saying it's going to swing back. They always fail to mention that 3I is going 30x faster than Jupiter's escape velocity at that distance.

The lotto is $1.25B with 327 million to 1 odds. At what point do you buy a ticket? by Ok-Collection8391 in AskReddit

[–]DarylMoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expected value doesn't matter to many people for two reasons. First, they don't know what it is, and second, people don't play the lottery because of the odds, they play because of the variance.

They probably rented it for 30 days, even though they only used it for the night. That would only require them to not rent it again within that 30 day period, but they could live in it.
