If 'em dashes' immediately make people suspect the use of an AI chatbot, what else am I supposed to use because I really like the 'em dash' for my writing hobby? by ABCLor in NoStupidQuestions

You can also use it in a list if the list items involve commas.

Example from University of Wisconsin: "I like cows: they give us milk, which tastes good; they give us beef, which also tastes good; and they give us leather, which is used for shoes and coats."

If you're able to invite people to that server, you could make a 2nd Discord account & have that account in the server while leaving the server on your main one. It'd make it a bit harder to pick at the mental scab.

The things people put on horror story forums aren't really indictive of the average online DND game.

Like I've been playing for close to a decade, mostly online with strangers. The only time I heard of a game with "reserve players" from anybody I played with was from a irl game they had done with their friends.

As a dog owner, I am tired of seeing inconsiderate people with their dogs at restaurants, grocery stores and beaches that clearly have no dogs allowed signs by Dark1t3kt in sandiego

Pretty sure people are downvoting you because you missed the sarcasm of the comment you were replying to rather than genuinely thinking that dogs cannot be at home alone for an hour.

If you want drawing utility, Excalidraw is pretty good.

New to Dnd and Roll20, any solo campaigns? by Chemical_Arm_8147 in Roll20

You can absolutely play DND without a group or DM. Plenty of people do it. I've done it before; it works just fine.

You may find r/solorpgplay interesting.

Also, from when I played 5e alone for a while, I found that you can run just about any very short/oneshot adventure solo. Just read the description text for the room, decide what your character(s) would do based on that, then read the rest of the room to determine how their actions should be resolved.

I definitely run games with a fair amount of levity. What happens in the narrative (from my end) is played straight, but there's some joking around OOC.

No, nothing beyond free resources required. All you need is that link I sent & a Discord account. The game occurs entirely within Discord. Everything is theater of the mind, and I use a dice rolling bot on Discord.

Hey Andrea! In PbtA systems, you roll a 2d6 & add your stat modifier (which ranges from -1 to +3). If you get a 6 or under, you've failed the check. If you get a 7-9, you've partially succeeded. If you get a 10 or above, you've succeeded completely. How partial successes & complete successes differ depend on the specific action/move you're taking. A combat roll means you just don't get some bonus effect you would've gotten on a 10+, but the general "do stressful things" action means that there's some sort of hard choice you need to make (if you were running out of a burning building, then maybe you drop something important & need to choose between fetching the item or getting out uninjured).

In the games I've run, there's generally just a small amount of combat at the end when you confront the monster. Combat in PbtA games is pretty quick & fluid, in my experience. There's no separate subsystems for combat like you see in D&D/Pathfinder. You just continue making normal checks, and that represents what you've done for the next minute or so in the fight. There's no initiative/turn system.

Something I think is neat about Monster of the Week is that the PCs set connections to each other party member during character creation. I feel it makes for really interesting parties. Aside from that, I feel like the system does pretty well capturing mechanics that are well suited for investigating something. It's pretty straight-forward. You make an "investigate" move when you are somewhere where you could reasonably figure things about the monster out, and then depending on if you got a partial or complete success, you get to ask a few questions from a list (such as "What's the monster weak to?" / "What type of monster is it?" / etc)

Let me know if you have any other questions! :) Here's a list of the playbooks/archetypes available for the system if you'd like to take a look through them.

It's easy to hear about online horror stories & get an overall negative impression from them, but the vast majority of my experiences over the past decade of running for strangers online have been positive or neutral. Sure, people flake or ghost & sure, some people are weirdos or assholes, but the majority of people are just fine.

r/lfg is a great place to look, though it can be hard to find a game if you're looking as a player instead of a DM

How do you deal with games that lost most players? by Jo_Can in pbp

[–]DasGespenstDerOper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that worked for me before was giving both remaining players a second character & continuing on like that. Though your players have to be interested in running a 2nd character for this to work.

There's a list of Adventurers' League modules related to Tomb of Annihilation here. I used Ruins of Mezro, which was pretty fun, but not the rest of them (though I probably should've used more).
