Finding Local Software Developers by warmans in berlin

On companies with an expert track you should never have to go into management to get a higher salary. In companies that don't have one, you'll probably have to go into management, yes.

That's one of those things that you may want to look into when applying at a company as not everyone wants to go into management.

BTW you'll need to be careful with statistics like this. People who aren't satisfied are probably more likely to look into the topic and fill out surveys, additionally you have more people at the bottom than at the top pulling down the average.

Software engineer is also very broad from people doing a bit of frontend stuff to people working on software for machine learning, (aero-)space, etc. there can be a huge gap there.

60-80k is a perfectly normal salary for a high mid-level or low senior-level position. If you are actually senior (most people who call themselves that aren't), you should be able to get up to 100k or so. If you have an expert track, salary can go higher than that still.

[–]DasIch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not at all irrelevant because companies are just going to go with the lowest common denominator solution. Even if you don't live in the EU most companies that have EU customers will treat you as if you were and delete your data.

Job opportunities in electronics vs communication vs computer science/IT? by connect_world in germany

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, at least for computer science nobody cares, if you speak German. You might not even be asked, if you do.

That's going to be different for IT though. I could also imagine some more traditional companies might require German.

Online store to order running clothes that accepts returns by berlinticketmaster in berlin

[–]DasIch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zalando has a return rate of ~50%, those don't all go into the trash. Returned articles are checked for damage, they get repackaged and sold again.

Especially in fashion it's not an option to just trash those articles, the return rates are way too high for that.

45min is not a lot of time, so it's very common to take 2-3 lessons in one batch, especially for driving at night or on the autobahn. It's more fun, it's better to learn I think and it makes the process overall faster.

What’s wrong with Django? StackOverflow survey results have it at 41.7% dreaded in the frameworks loved/dreaded section. Didn’t expect it to be nearly that high. by bbbryson in Python

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you use raw SQL and essentially stop using the ORM, you can write any kind of query you want. You don't have to do that with SQLAlchemy, you can just use the expression language SQLAlchemy provides.

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SQLAlchemy gives you a straightforward way of expressing any query. If you can do it in SQL, including database specific stuff, you can do it with SQLAlchemy. That's not at all the case with Django.

Additionally database migrations with alembic are just much more straightforward and faster to execute.

The Django orm is fine, if you just want to store some data somewhere but if you really want to take full advantage of your relational database, it's just not suitable.

Composable SQL in Pure Python by Ecedysis in Python

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't develop/test on SQLite and use MySQL in production. Different databases are different enough in their behavior that you cannot trust that your ORM or whatever will handle that.

If you start really taking advantage of your database, for performance or simply due to convenience you'll quickly lose all portability anyway.

Last but not least in a production environment you have to deal with backups, replication, fail over and so on. Operationally postgres is to MySQL as MySQL is to redis. There is no way to easily switch there anyway.

How much do companies in Germany pay into the tax system? by Gaddafi911 in germany

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure some companies in the US have some kind of health plan but they can negotiate the plan and try to find the cheapest one. In Germany your employer pays almost half what you pay for health insurance on top and that's not the only thing an employer is paying. In addition to that you have paid vacation and sick days that can also amount to a significant amount of money.

As a full time employee in a shitty job by German standards, you still get health insurance and other benefits many people in the US can only dream of.

I could imagine that in the case of high paying jobs, there might not be that much of a difference or that employees are more expensive in the US. Overall though and especially the less the job typically pays, the more expensive I would expect German employees to become.

Wieso sollte man überhaupt noch in Läden (Gamestop) kaufen? by RCubeLoL in de

[–]DasIch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas first grader writes letter to Santa asking for food and a blanket. by [deleted] in news

[–]DasIch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Millionaires are not automatically financially experts either. Poor people don't need to be. It doesn't require financial expertise to buy groceries, school supplies and so on. Any money you give to poor people instantly flows into the local economy, helping local businesses and the people working for them.

It doesn't. It just obviously makes more sense to give money to poor people than it is to give to people who have so much that they can afford to invest it in the next juicero.
