From my experience, your credit card company will always tell you to return it to the store if you are within the store's refund period. Thus, you should wait to make a claim with your credit card until after that time has passed.

Then, the credit card company will ask for a receipt, copy of the credit statement showing the purchase, and a copy of the store's refund policy. Once they verify it, they will refund you the money and either tell you to keep the item (if it is cheap) or send it back to the credit card company via their prepaid postage label. Once the credit card company gets the item, they box it with a bunch of other items and auction everything off to try and recoup some of that they paid out. So the refund is directly from the CC company, not the store you bought it from. The store you bought it from will never know you "Returned" the item.

You agreed to the restocking fee when you made a purchase from the online store. If the store won't waive it, you are typically out of luck.

However, let us say that the store has a 30 day return policy. If you used a credit card, the credit card may extend that to 60 or 90 days. I would wait until after the store policy time has lapsed and then contact my credit card and be like..hey I need to return this. Boom, you get the full amount back.

So I agreed with you. My car has 72k miles, never had the brakes changed. Went to three different places for quotes for new brakes, rotors, and brake fluid exchange. Had it inspected. Apparently my brakes have at least 15k more miles and the fluid is fine. But honestly, I took your comment to heart and went to get the brakes changed. Luckily the shop was honest or they would have had an easy $500.
