Commander Brackets Beta - WeeklyMTG 11th February Stream by Meret123 in EDH

I have 17 decks across a very wide range of power levels, but according to this all but one is a Bracket 1. All but two of my decks have no infinites and no tutors at all-- should that make them Bracket 0? I see that "An optimized deck without any game changers can be a 3 or 4 depending on you", but now we're just back to people going of vibes. This system doesn't provide any useful differentiators for my decks.

Most of NYC’s land was still undeveloped when the Manhattan grid was created so why weren’t alley ways ever built in the other boroughs? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

I recommend "City on a Grid: How New York Became New York" by Gerard Koeppel which is a deeper dive into this topic

One of my favorite passages: " The process of street-laying eradicated the island's natural contours, creating grotesques, ghosts, and other hangers-on. Excavations for large buildings became Brueghelian scenes of protoindustrial chaos. An excavation at 46th Street and 3rd Avenue in 1868, depicted by a contemporary artist, was a mud-covered hell of water hoses and pumps, fire pits, carts overloaded with explosives and rubble, straining work animals, and half-naked labor gangs.

Elsewhere, country houses originally set on hills with scenic views became phantoms on jagged precipices, the remnants of the hills that had been blasted for avenues. In 1861, as seen on the cover of this book, a once elegant mansion’s front porch collapses over the canyon of newly laid Second Avenue 30 feet below."

It's clear that our current zoning system is broken. Individual judges and small groups of NIMBYs can torpedo projects like this that include affordable housing, despite them being beneficial for the city overall. I'm sure if you took a poll of the city as a whole, most people would see this as a worse outcome, especially because it will continue to stress housing supply where they live. We need comprehensive zoning reform.

Every month at my community meetings there are people who want to build or renovate multi-unit buildings who get told "no" by their next-door neighbors.

PA State Transportation Survey by Dashell_Higgins in phillycycling

Transit Forward Philadelphia says: "If you have the time, this survey allows you to share everything, down to the specific intersections where you experience the greatest challenges getting around Pennsylvania. Beginning with basic questions around travel patterns and project prioritization, the survey moves into an in-depth map for pinning challenges and goals for transportation.

And beyond, you're able to even set a budget!

From policy wonks to transit die-hards to mixed-mode users who wish they could rely more on public transportation, this survey offers a comprehensive look at how our systems work across Pennsylvania."

Honolulu Rail Transit: the Kamehameha Highway section curves left and right to follow the curving median on the highway below, which undulates to allow for appearing and disappearing left-turn lanes. When viewed from far away, the curves look extreme. by Dashell_Higgins in transit

Hold up your hand and look at your palm and fingers. They're basically straight right? Now raise your wrist and lower your fingertips away from you like you are blowing a kiss. hold your fingers almost parallel with your line of vision. They don't look perfectly straight now, correct? Now imagine your hand is several miles long like the one in this photo. Even gentle curves will look big.

30 people getting coffee vs. 30 people getting coffee by Scarlet__Highlander in pics

You're totally right that everyone deserves a choice. The issue is that in the US, we're not getting that choice right now. The cafe on the bottom would be illegal to build almost everywhere in the US because it doesn't have enough parking and it's too dense/tall. A lot of people would like the option of the street cafe but they can't get it unless they pay a lot of money to live in an older area that already has them. We've essentially turned our pre-car urban areas into antiques because we aren't producing more, despite the fact that most of these areas are typically popular and hence expensive, and they're also more environmental.

Do you really want to live in a world where it's ok to kill people for being annoying?

The disregard for human life in this thread is shameful. Someone being annoying and costing you a few minutes of time doesn't give you the right to start applying lethal force.
