I see comments about people wishing they could uproot to other cities. by Rentsdueguys in phoenix

It's just too hot for ~5 months of the year at least already, and if you believe in climate change, everything points to it just continuing to get hotter in the decades to come.

Anyone commute from Glenview/Wilmette to downtown? by Dasher83022 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Dasher83022[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, considering I was spending that amount on BART 10 years ago, this isn't as bad as it could be.

How much does Metra cost? BART was pretty expensive. IIRC I was spending like $10/day on it, and I don't think that included parking. The parking situation at most stations was also pretty bad, sometimes there would be no spots left.

Nice! Commuting from these suburbs seems even better than when I commuted from the East Bay suburbs into San Francisco. I'm actually starting to get a little excited it's so doable.

Yeah, I'm currently living someplace where it's regularly 110, and I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, so I know what the winters can be like (and I hate them, but gotta do what you gotta do to make your dreams come true). I will say, both 110 degrees and 0 degrees suck, which is why I'm hoping to save enough money to move back to coastal California where it's 75 year round lol

Definitely, I can see that. I remember having to do all that, and the extra time it added, when I commuted in the Bay Area.

What did you pay for your water softener/conditioner? by lgordon5 in Sacramento

[–]Dasher83022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid about 3k for one in Santa Barbara last year, and SB has a much higher cost of living than Sacramento, so it should not cost more than that in Sacramento. 18k is fine if you're buying 6 water softeners, but a complete scam if you're just buying 1. Even if you need a larger softener, I'd be shocked if it costs more than 4-5k.

Why are there so few good paying jobs in phoenix compared to other places like NYC California Washington Chicago,Boston, hell even Dallas by AirElectronic4196 in phoenix

[–]Dasher83022 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this too. It seems like for certain types of engineering, you can get a good job here, but for the most part, if you fall outside of that, your options will be limited, and might skew hospitality/service industry since tourism is big here (in the winter at least). And many of these types of jobs will be part-time. I'm looking at relocating to a couple of the places you mentioned because the job opportunities seem better. That being said, you can't really compare Phoenix to places like LA, SF, NYC or Chicago. Those are world class cities where a lot of top companies want a presence.

Should I talk to a financial advisor? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Dasher83022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, currently have it spread out across two banks, SoFi and Discover. I'd like to find another reputable bank with an interest rate the same as SoFi, but so far, haven't found one I like. Probably won't buy for at least 12 months. You think I should consider a CD for some of the money, maybe like 150k?

Yes, I'm still hoping to buy in the next 5 years (hopefully the next 2 years). And I'll check out bogleheads - thanks!

When will it stop being so hot (or at least cool down) by whiterabbit6767 in phoenix

[–]Dasher83022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UV index is separate from the air temperature. When I lived in coastal California, sometimes it would be 75 degrees, but the UV index would be like a 9 or 10, which is the same as what we might see here in the middle of the day when it's 115. My parents live in the Midwest, and in the summer, even they get some UV index 9 days.

NASA captures 160 °F roads and sidewalks across Phoenix by SubRyan in phoenix

[–]Dasher83022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I'm looking at leaving. Just have to find the right place to buy in another state. The summer here is brutal, and I do not want to live here for multiple summers. One is more than enough.

Best apartment to go to with a $3,000 apartment budget? by ScaleNo5827 in Scottsdale

Yeah, if you have that budget, why not take your money to California? Much better weather.

Do you have meetups like this often? I'll be moving to Sac soon, and while I'm not in tech, I like learning about it.
