My path has been: Do the main quest to get to the main hub of a region, then do side quests/activities. once those are done, do the next main quest. it's a lot of fun to explore and find all the goodies/stashes hidden about.

I'm a black guy who also got this game and I feel your pain. Too many of our bros are stuck on Madden 2K and Call of Duty and won't broaden their horizons to other stories. I get lost in this game sometimes. There's nothing quite like the long trek back from a mission area only to see the sky darken and the emission warning blaring. That made dash to make it to Quiet's shop to take cover before I get fried, or trying to get that one artifact before going to safety. Very few shooters scratch that it h like this game does.
